  • Archbishop Buechlein

Saw on the front page of the Star's website that Archbishop Daniel Buechlein is in a battle with Cancer and Hodgkin's Disease. Anyone hear if we will see him back at 16th and Georgetown come May?

No matter your take on religion he is a good man and has become one of the great traditions of the 500. I hope he can beat this.

By the way remember when the Pacers were good? He would give them a mention during the pre race invocation.

Archbishop Buechlein has temporarily delegated most of his public responsibilities over to Msgr. Joe Schaedel, the Vicar General.

For one reason or anotherm perhaps illness, or schedule conflict, Schaedel perfomed the invocation in his place in 2004. He did so in 1997 also, perhaps because of the Monday rain delay.

Fr. Schadel was my parish priest through my high school years. He is a good and decent man who, if the archdiocese had sense, would consider him next in line for the job as Archbishop.

He and Father Glenn O'Connor (priest/pit crew member extrordinaire since about '75) are considered our family priest and have comforted us at the deepest moments of our family pain and were always present at the highest moments of our family joy. Not to mention, they both check in at times in between.

I always love it when the Archbishop says return safely in the languages of every driver. I am pretty sure the xenophobes don't like it, but the action itself shows how international this great event called the Indianapolis 500.

I love that too - it's so inclusive for ALL our drivers that participate in the world's greatest race!

I'm very sad to hear the news. As has been said, Archbishop Buechlein is a good man. As a former resident of Indy and a Catholic, I know that he has provided good leadership over the years. It always seemed to me that he really enjoyed the spectacle of the 500, and wanted to make everyone feel welcome and pray for their safety.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He means a lot to the Hulman-George family, and to drivers and others closely connected to the race.

Archbishop Buechlein is from Jasper, Indiana. Count on any diocese that picks a born and raised resident of its' territory to not get a cardinal any time soon. That is how the Vatican does it: keep them local in the little places, send in a Cardinal who has no past in the big places.

It keeps the finger prints and the PR clean.

From a friend of mine, who works with Msgr. Schaedel, and just emailed me back not to use his name but instead call him "Brother Deep Throat" :

Msgr. Schaedel doesn't think IMS will invite him back anytime soon. The race has had rain both times he said the invocation.

By the way, if you're interested in educating the forum folk, no archdiocese picks its own bishop. The bishops in the country in question recommend three (I think) candidates for a particular diocese, then the pope appoints a new bishop for that diocese. Usually it's one of the recommended candidates, but not always.

Smaller dioceses generally get rookie bishops. Archdioceses, like Indianapolis, get seasoned veterans. The largest archdioceses and those with histories of being led by cardinals, generally get the guys who will wear red hats. Still, it isn't out of the question that Indianapolis could have a cardinal someday.

How did this thread get sidetracked into a discussion about the appointment of Cardinals?
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

Here's a forwarded email from my friend, sent by Msgr. Schaedel himself after receiving the link to this thread:

At least at present the invocation and the race remain on the archbishop's calendar. He plans/hopes to be there. Although I enjoying doing "the rain dance," I hope he is there also!
