  • 2008 Driver Standings Predictions

A guess at how 2008 will shake out in the ICS series, with the 'regular' drivers. Thoughts?

    1) Scott Dixon
    2) Helio Castroneves
    3) Tony Kanaan
    4) Dan Wheldon
    5) Ryan Briscoe
    6) Danica Patrick
    7) Marco Andretti
    8) Justin Wilson
    9) Ryan Hunter-Reay
    10) Vitor Meira
    11) Buddy Rice
    12) Oriol Servia
    13) Alex Tagliani
    14) Ed Carpenter
    15) Graham Rahal
    16) Hideki Mutoh
    17) A.J. Foyt, Jr.
    18) Darren Manning
    19) Alex Lloyd
    20) Pablo Donoso
    21) Franck Perera
    22) Jay Howard
    23) Marty Roth
    24) Milka Duno

I had the toughest time with the CCWS drivers (too highly placed?), Mutoh, and Lloyd (is this a regular TCGR ride?).

This is going to be tough, trying to judge where the CCWS teams are going to slot in. I don't think it will be quite as dire for them as some are predicting, but it's still going to take some time to get going. It makes for some interesting rankings. I don't think Briscoe is near being the 5th best driver, nor Doornbos only being 19th best (which I suppose is irrelevant now that Minardi is out), but teams are playing a big part in the ranking. I'll go back and edit in whomever the 2nd Conquest driver is and whatever other cars show up between now and Homestead.

      1. Castroneves
      2. Dixon
      3. Kanaan
      4. Wheldon
      5. Briscoe
      6. Meira
      7. Hunter-Reay
      8. Power
      9. Wilson
      10. Andretti
      11. Mutoh
      12. Rahal
      13. Patrick
      14. Junqueira
      15. Servia
      16. Rice
      17. Manning
      18. Perera
      19. Howard
      20. Bernoldi
      21. Carpenter
      22. Foyt
      23. Viso
      24. Moraes
      25. Roth

Bless you for Bruno....but I'd be surprised (albeit delightedly and pleasantly so, BTW) if he made THIS SEASON'S "top 10".
But, one can always hope, eh?
However, given their vast resources (especially, engineering, etc...), if there would be any ex-CC drivers in the top 10, I'd have to go with Wilson and (maybe) Rahal.

I don't have a clue where to put Briscoe on that list. Could be first or last.

                Our new comers

IMHO, are new friends won't be at a disadvantage on our Street/road courses. Look how well the "have nots" have done in the ICS with the proper driver. So....I think the old CCWS will finish higher in the standings.

Na, I think you have the CCWS drivers about right, especially Wilson, he will be the highest finishing I think.

So hard to pick this given how fluid the former-CCWS team/driver situation is. Tracy with Conquest? Doornbos and Minardi in? Tag out at KVR and Power in?

Thanks for the feedback. I have to confess that there's a mercenary aspect to my starting this thread, as I'll be picking my ICS drivers this weekend with our motorsports pool draft (ICS, NASCAR Sprint, and F1). Maybe I'll do better this year. . .I just have to listen more closely to the advice I receive (Jimmy Hendricks, I should have heeded your ICS suggestions this past year!).

Of the new drivers from the CCWS, Will Power, Justin Wilson, Bruno Junquiera, Robert Doornbos, and Oriol Servia will all finish the season in the top 12 in points, with the first three in the top 8.

And although I rate Graham Rahal very highly, his learning curve will be steeper than the others, who in addition to being extremely quick are also seasoned vets. Therefore, even though I think GR is destined for stardom, and a decidedly better driver than Marco, I think he will struggle a few times this year.

The more road circuits there are on the schedule, the less and less we'll see of Wheldon at the front, whose performances suggests that, on the twisty stuff, he's about even with, say, a driver like Sam Hornish, Jr.

The most complete drivers, and the ones starting the season on the best footing, are Dixon and Kanaan. One of these will be the champ in '08. Helio will be strong, too.

Danica's days as a consistent front-runner are over, and she won't finish in the top 12.

Briscoe has his best opportunity ever, and I think he'll do well. I expect he'll win a race, or two.

From the driver listed on as confirmed at Indycar.com, and the two others just recently confirmed at KVR, I have it playing out like this,

                            1) Helio Finally takes the Championship
                            2) Wheldon
                            3) Dixon
                            4) Kanaan
                            5) Briscoe
                            6) Hideki
                            7) Danica
                            8) Wilson (NHL)
                            9) Vitor
