Anyone else here noticing a trend of tracks?

Ovals at the top, streets at the bottom...

(Im not a troll, I promise!) I enjoy road courses as much as the next guy, but honestly, I feel that a 30/70 mix of rc/ovals (respectively) would be a winning mix for the series. The purpose of the Indycar series was to promote american open wheel racing at its finest, and ovals seem to project the raw intensity, excitement, suspense, and adrenaline into the american soul. 30% road courses is still a respectable amount, and still enough to make a difference.

Not trying to step on any toes here...

Could you Bold the current 2008 venues kind sir?
      Natural Born Cynic

What irks me (maybe its too soon for the truth), DW was a 16-oval WIN specialist, yet the vast majority those boohooing for him, hardcarders & fans, alike are the same ones trying to kill anything with more than 9 deg banking & 4 corners, where Dan ultimately made his home...

I would substitute Mid-O/Cleveland with the Rock (maybe I'm biased ) - that is the only real conflict I see. The top 20 would make a great series!

This would make a very nice schedule.

I hope some of the IRL mucky-mucks get a look at this poll.

                Interesting that for the goal of a 20 race schedule;

7 of the top 20 are off the current schedule and at least 6 of those appear to be not of interest to the league

of the remaining 36, subject to personal interpretation

5 are on the schedule and most seem likely to stay
1 can go with Gene Simmons to the History file

but 8 look closed or out of business
9 would seem to have no realistic chance
7 might have an outside chance
3 have at least been talked about seriously

which would mean 2 from a combination of the 7 that are off and the 3 that have been talked about fill out the 20 unless some of the other 13 get cut.

This is one of those times when I wish that there were more reporters covering the sport. If someone would look at this list, not a scientific poll but I doubt there is going to be a better sampling, there are some tough questions to ask the IRL. Is the league interested in the opinions of the fans on where to race? If so would the league at least make attempts to establish races on that list from the top down? Or ask someone to explain what the criteria of selecting races is. What are the shortcomings of those passed over from the top half of the list and why are those that fans find less desirable chosen instead?

While polls like this are fun, results from an oval-centric message board vs. the fans who actually show up at these things are two different things.

Case in point: the top rated road course on this poll is Road America. Road America is a terrific course, but it was one of the lowest attended ChampCar venues over the last few years.

Phoenix is #6 yet they couldn't draw flies out there last time. It was pitiful. Mid-Ohio had better attendance than most of the ovals on there except for Indy and Texas. Watkins Glen has been one of the highest rated IRL races in terms of TV ratings.

I'm all in favor of a higher ratio of ovals, if they prove to be more successful in terms of attendance and TV ratings. I think we all want the series to grow and I'll tolerate more ovals if it turns out to help Indycar in general. But looking at the numbers, I'd say the jury is still out.

More Than 100,000 in St. Pete

                  100,000 at Belle Isle

Yes, I realize that the attendance numbers are somewhat inflated by the media, but there's no way that MIS gets anywhere near that amount. Belle Isle is a crummy race, but they get the crowds and MIS doesn't. Which would you choose if you were TG?

I want to know the 4.63% of you who don't want the Indy 500 on the schedule.

Please stand up and be counted.

                        I hate that.

                        I really, really, hate that.

But it is probably the truth. And I guess I can put aside some differences and give some credit to the road courses, at least them them a chance - for the merger, you know.

I know. I really want OW to succeed with this merger. Belle Isle is definitely one of the worst OW courses in history, yet if the can get 100K (even if it's really only 80K) out there, then so be it. If I were kingmaker, it would be strictly real road courses and Super Speedways like Indy, Fontana, etc. I hate street courses for the most part (although St. Pete isn't bad) and I don't like short ovals either. But I'll be watching every race this year, although I'll probably snooze a little during Bell Isle.

I think this poll is actually a pretty good indicator ... TF's members represent the market for IndyCar events and the response is pretty decent

that said core fan interest is only one part of the equation - as you well illustrate by attendance numbers - those are the casual fans - who are important as well - and then there is the business benefits etc
