  • 50/50 Oval/Road Course Schedule

It sounds like with the addition of Surfers Paradise, Edmonton,
and Long Beach that we will have 9 ovals and 9 road courses.
I have always been an oval lover and thought that the lack of
ovals was one of the MAJOR problems with CART circa 1995.
With all of the tracks abandoned by the demise of CCWS,
I just want to put in my 2 cents as a fan: if we have to
add a bunch of road/street circuits, PLEASE, PLEASE
let's keep a balance where we always have at least
half the series on ovals. Indianapolis is an OVAL and
the series that runs there should have a strong oval
track tradition - not 2/3 of its races run on road courses. :nono:

[Edit - Mods, I should read all posts before I post - you can move
to the Proposed 2009 schedule thread if you want]

I doubt that the original designer of the IMS considered it an "oval".

A circuit in France has a fast sweeper first coined by the drivers and then officially listed as "Indianapolis". There's a reason why.

But I'm with you on the need for ovals, the only problem is a certain track ownership group keeps buying and closing the good ones.

TG seems to think that they have exhausted all possible ovals venues. I'm not sure what he mean. Either low attendance or apathy from ISC. In any event they will probably keep the ones they have. But I do know this, any new ovals built in the U.S. will be built to lure a NASCAR race and designed for Stock Cars. I wonder if the IRL is looking at the oval in Germany. That is an awesome track.

Here it is, Mr. Tony George says 50/50 is OK. Now, after a year with the former CART-CCWS owners in the fold, they start making noise, "We want more street-road courses. I hope Mr. George holds the ship on a steady course.

So I guess IMS is a road course? Or a street couse?

I think 50/50 is a good mix. I'd prefer more road courses but 50/50 is fine with me. I think just about everyone can live with that.

I can live without racing altogether, and I think the "Never ever race on anything but ovals" stubborness is silly, but 50/50 split is really pushing it and coming close to abandoning tradition altogether.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the Keenest of them all?
