I was reading Smoky Yunick's book a few years ago and he seemed to think black tires were stupid anyway. Since rubber is naturally white. His reasoning was the black color they add absorbs too much heat and a white tire would be more consistent with temperature. I don't know if it was ever tested or not.

Firestone called them "Reverse Firestones". They looked better on TK's car with the black wheels than they did on the Penske and Ganassi cars with chrome wheels.

They would have an interesting appearance at night races and in the shadow of the main straight at Indy.

I'm thinking that is the plan.

You know what? I really like those. At first I was skeptical, but after seeing them, I really do think they are pretty cool! Something different, not bad.
