  • General controls setup?

My son got GTR for Christmas. We have a Momo wheel set that is pretty new as well.

Upon first driving it I found the game almost excruiatingly painful even on semi-pro. The car drifted everywhere and it was damn near impossible to make a run down a straight without going in to some side to side impersonation of Helio in the lead with full block mode on.....

Anyway, I adjusted the steering sensitivity down to around 24%, left throttle and brake at 50% and set the steering dead zone at 4%. It seems to be better and we are both finally able to turn some laps and knock some speeds down.

So far I have stuck mostly with Barcelona and Monza. I can turn a few laps at Barcelona in the Lotus or the Corvette but the Porsche I find just maddening. Monza is getting much better but I'm still a danger to electrons everywhere.

Any hints on what it takes to just get rolling without getting too frustrated? I haven't played many good sims and the last I put any time in to was the WoO SprintCar game from Dirtbag.

On a funny note, my kids found a way to fall through the earth at Monza. If you come out of your garage and head out of the pits the wrong way there is an opening in the guardrail on the left at about what would be pit in. There are corner workers standing there. If you come out of the garage and gas it, aiming straight for that hole you will get one of two results. First is a rather spectacular end over end flip that deposits you back on the track. The other shows the car falling in to a hole then dropping through the earth crust. Much to my surprise I learned that the earth is indeed flat, at least in this world. Certainly entertained the kids for awhile......and Dad.

Some cars will drift somewhat (Porsche) when on cold tires, but that will go away when they are warmed up. I think your problem is in your settings. Your steering sensitivity should be higher, around 40-50%. Drop speed sensitive steering way down, I have mine at 7%, others (Slade) are prob lower. Steering dead zone should be down as well. I have mine at 0. I have never driven it on semi-pro so I dont know if the settings are different. Stay away from Porsches for awhile, they can be a handful. Stick with the Vette and use some of the driving aids, like stability help, traction control, antilock brakes. As you progress you can dial those back some. Good Luck, our little community here will be happy to help, we'd always like to see more competitors on course, or in the litter, with us.

I forgot the speed sensitive steering part, I have that cranked down very low. Maybe the Porsche is just my major issue. I figured that would be a safer bet to start on but I suppose that was the wrong direction.

In the litter is me for sure. I need to figure out what to do with the stuff after each sessions harvest.

Any idea what I should be shooting for time wise on those tracks to think I'm finally getting a clue?

Sorry for the late reply here.

In GTR you almost drive the cars more with the pedals than the wheel. Control setup is pretty cruicial. You want steering set as close to 50% as possible for a linear control input. For the pedals you want to close your eyes and move the pedal up and down a few times...then put your pedal as close to half throttle/brake and your sensations tell you, then open your eyes. Move the slider bar for either pedal until the motion bar below is at half way with your pedal held where you felt half way was. The key here is that you set the pedals according to your feel..ideally they should be around 50%. The speed sensitive steering I have set to 25%...that is the setting that affects how much input you have at higher speeds...if the car is drifting around alot on the straights adjust the speed sensitive number higher. You'll still have good feel in the corners, but not as much twitchiness in the fast straights. Dead zone is zero for me..don't like lag in input. This game's settings are based on a curve with 50% being a straight 45 degree ascending angle...lower (25% or so) settings have a higher intial input (convex ascending curve) that tapers and a higher setting (above 50%) (concave ascending curve) has less intial input then it spikes upward more quickly at the end of the control throw. Most linear is of course 50% but adjust a few times using the closed eyes technique cause each pedal set is different and we all have different sensations of where 1/2 way is.

The 911's are a special breed..repeat after me...never lift in a corner, never lift in a corner. They like to either be on slight throttle in the turn or very light trail braking or throttle...but the hate abrupt lifting unless the fronts are dead straight. They are strong driving out of the corner if you tend to late apex them a bit...but be careful (esp. GT2) cause it'll come around quick on the gas out of slow corners.

The thing to work on is threshold braking. Start braking where the track gets dark before the corner and adjust from there. Slow in, fast out works well in the beginning. Secondly focus on good smooth lines with good smooooth inputs. That will bring lap times down much faster than smoking tires and big time drifts. Every bit of rubber on laid on the track is rubber you'll need later.

As for times..it depends on the car and setups. With stock setups I ran the 911 GT2 in the low 45's at Barcelona this morning in practice..which would use up tires in the race too quickly.

We haven't started our Season yet...looks like next Sunday. We handicap alot so if you want to join up feel free. Today's race saw a F575 win with a GT2 on his heels for the last 12 minutes. The field was rounded out with a Saleen and a Lambo. Average speed with a pitstop for the 45 minute race was around 94mph....that's what to shoot for..keeping it on the track and good AVERAGE speeds.

Let us know what else we can do to help...lots of fun we're having.

if it's the black momo make sure you enable "reverse effects" on the force feedback setup page.
