  • NHRA at Charlotte question

I drove past Z-Max Dragway this morning and was sort of surprised at the lack of motorhomes on site.

I seem to recall in years past the camper lot off turn 4 of the oval would be crammed full of RVs

but there was just a couple dozen there this morning.

Honestly the World of Outlaws weekend in November has more campers on Friday morning
than the NHRA did this mornong

Is that track not a big draw anymore?

Dad just got back from there just now and I asked him. He's a lifer who is at there every time the track is open. He said that the place was extremely empty, even for a Friday and it was the smallest crowd that he has seen.

He blames in on Charlotte 49ers football just a few miles down the road. It is their first year after three or four years of buildup, and they are playing good teams in a brand new stadium and have won the first two games. All the focus in the media is on them and they are absolutely packed in there for games. People's entertainment money is being spent on tailgating and football instead of racing.

Fortunately the Panthers are away this week so maybe Sunday will be good.

      I've seen the billboards. What's a 49er?

It was a ghost town, all three days. Friday and Sunday were the worst. NHRA needs to kill one Pomona, one Vegas and one Charlotte. Market saturation at all three. There is nothing unique about the NHRA product that a city needs two races a year.

I'd go if the tickets were cheaper

              and

if they went back to 1/4 mile runs
