  • Allen Johnson breaks the 6.50 ET barrier in Pro Stock

The Pro guys were just breaking into the 7's and 200 MPH a few years ago...

We reported some of the Pro Stock testing going on last week from Bradenton Motorsports Park. This week starts the second week of testing at the central Florida track as teams make final testing preparations before the Pomona season opener. One of those testing is Dodge Avenger driver Allen Johnson, who was able to break into the 6.40 barrier with a 6.498 @ 213.06 mph pass.

    From the Moparspeed Website:

Mopar Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson broke the 6.5-second barrier during a test session today at Bradenton (Fla.) Motorsports Park. Johnson posted an eye-popping 6.498-second elapsed time (an unofficial record for a Pro Stock car) at 213.06 mph.

Johnson has been hard at work testing at Bradenton since Feb. 3, breaking in a new Mopar Dodge Avenger chassis in preparation for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, scheduled for Feb. 24?27 in Pomona, Calif. According to the Team Mopar veteran, his Mopar HEMI-powered Dodge has the potential to better its recent run.

?It was an okay run. It wasn?t perfect, but the new car is working awesome,? said Johnson, who finished sixth in the 2010 Pro Stock standings. ?We left probably a hundredth (of a second) on the table. This chassis seems to have a lot bigger window. I?m not sure we?ve got everything we want out of it yet.?

Johnson has a joint test session tomorrow with NASCAR star Kurt Busch, who will make his Pro Stock debut in March at the NHRA Gatornationals.

    Kurt Bush tests his dragster:

#22-Kurt Busch spent all day Wednesday testing his NHRA Pro Stock dragster on Bradenton (FL) Motorsports Park's quarter-mile dragstrip. Under the watchful eye of Allen Johnson, his savvy veteran Mopar teammate, Busch clocked in with a fast run of 6.580-second elapsed time at 210.940 mph.

Johnson had already posted an eye-popping 6.498-second ET at 213.060 mph on Tuesday for an unofficial record run. "That was a run that we can be proud of," said Busch, who will be attempting to make his big-league NHRA debut during the 41st NHRA Gatornationals on March 11-13 at Gainesville Raceway.

"That run would be plenty fast enough to get us qualified at Gainesville and we're confident we are ready to go." Busch was so determined to get in a day of drag racing practice prior to Thursday's NASCAR Media Day in Daytona that he flew directly from a sponsor appearance in California on Tuesday night and made it to the drag strip early Wednesday morning. That was not what I was expecting a Pro Stock car to look like.

They stopped looking stock about the same time stock cars stopped looking stock, the mid 90's.
