  • Bahrain and Turkey? Really a good idea?

I've attended the Canadian GP for the last 4 years, so I was very upset with when I found out it was cancelled because of tobacco legislation. So you can imagine my interest when I read this little bit regarding Turkey...

From the SpeedTV article ]SpeedTV: Bahrain Set for April

    Thsi little tidbit was interesting....

"The deal, reported to be worth $13.5m annually, was finalized at the end of a week in which government health officials in Ankara had asserted that tobacco sponsorships would not be permitted at the event...."

    Hmmm....

Now..with that aside...am I the only one who's disturbed with the idea of F-1 going to the Middle East. Given the current state of affairs in the world...is going to the epi-center really the smart thing to do. My concerns are two fold.

    1. Bahrain is the home port of the Navy's Fifth Fleet. Also, what's the reasoning into bringing an event that glorifies all the "western" ideals into a region that is vehemently opposed to western influences. Admittedly, Bahrain is "friend" of the West..but that has not stop infiltrators and outsiders from doing damge, and the fact that it is a friend...makes it even more of a target. You can't tell me that a "Western" event that has the possibilitie of bringing in 210,000 spectators isn't a very very tempting target.
    2. There's a vehement and almsot violent anti-western sentiment in the genral Turkish population. Coupled with the fact that the gov't has reiterated it's anti-tobacco stance, it makes the decision to cut Canada that much more suspect. If F-1 was serious about penetrating the North American market..that is not the way to do it.

Right on. What's next, the GP of Chechnya? How about Afghanastan? For every new one they add, they will have to drop one off the schedule. I can see it now. Go to Rawanda and drop Monza.

You're not too off the mark. Think about....in the the next 2 to 3 years..there will be 4 new GP's added, Bahrain, China, Turkey, and Russia in that order. That means, unless the schedule is expanded to 20...then something needs to be dropped. The teams won't agree to expand the schedule beyond 16, and Bernie won't pay the extra money (let's be honest...bribe the teams) to run an expanded schedule.

My prediction..you can say good-bye to Great Britain, San Marino, Nurburgring, and probabbly Maylasia (by F-1 standards..that race's been a flop.)

They'll go wherever their paycheck is the largest. Even if the watermark on the check is blood.

They appear to care less about fans than c^rt. How else would you explain Spa or Canada? There are ways around idiotic tobacco legislation.

I would prefer no races in the middle east while terrorist nutjobs are running around using religion to justify homicidal mental illness, but I'm not Bernie, and he is more successful in business than I am. Plus it would be great entertainment for American troops.

Money is only one way to measure success. To that end Bernie has been very successful. But at what cost?

Bernie's bussiness practices can be argued all day. At the end of day...he made F-1 the biggest spectator sport in the world next to Soccer.

However...I do think that these whole Middle East issue needs to be seriously looked at. I just don't get a good feeling about it at all.

Aren't soccer matches held against European teams in the middle east all the time? What's the difference between that and Europeans coming to the middle east to race?

I'm particularly excited about the Bahrain and Shanghai races. I think the diversity of F1 just adds to the excitement.

Yeah, much ado about nothing.Bernie is just spreading his wings. There are too many races in ''old'' Europe, too narrow a demographic.
If Bernie patches into the Muslim crowd,he may just be unstoppable.

It's a shame to lose some of the classic tracks, but San marino or Nurburgring[jr]would be no great loss.
                Bring on some fresh tracks!

San Marino is a totally unnecessary race. Same with Nurburgring.
Personally, I'd like to see one in Mexico City, New Delhi, and maybe Johannesburg. The Russian race will be a real asset in my opinion. That's a huge untapped market.
