  • Melbourne after race thread.

Great to see new faces on the Podium. Riccardo looks like the real deal. Who would have thgought that Magnussen would get a podium in his first race. The fuel problem did not seem to come into play as much as I thought it would. It will be interesting to see what happenes without a safety car period. Bottas impressed and I wonder what he would have done without hitting the wall. Hulkenberg was showing good and I think Force India will be better then Sauber. I would like to see Rosberg win it all this year.

Possible post race tech disqualification for Daniel. Red Bull are currently in the Stewards appealing the decision.

I hate to make conclusions based on one race, but...

It seems like race-long fuel conservation strategies are going to bore the **** out of me. Rather than a driver at the limit of himself and his equipment, he's always going to be holding back... unless we're lucky enough to see a bunch of early cautions so they can go all-out (which in F1 we don't see all that often).

Hate the new rules. And the cars sound like nothing, my teenage neighbour's Honda Civic sounds more like a race car now.

Ricciardo has been excluded from the Aussie GP. Details:

So the fuel flow penalties ARE going to be after the fact. Great.

I started to post this thought yesterday (really) but decided not to whine about this too. But I wondered about how reliable this fuel sensor could be. I am so sick of fuel-saving in racing! And now we are going to have arguments all season long about these friggin sensors. Maybe Ricciardo has been robbed of a brilliant podium. Maybe he gets reinstated, and then Magnussen and Button suffer. And who will ever know who was "correct?"

I mean, who needs this s#t! To all racing authorities everywhere: Give them enough fuel and Let Them Race, for crying out loud!

Let's get real. Does anyone think this BS makes auto racing "green?" Come on. I love the environment. Politically, I am a card-carrying liberal. But auto racing is, has been, and will always be, one of the least green things man has ever devised. I love my racing, so I simply choose not to judge it by how (non) green it is. Seriously, who's kidding who? Auto racing, green? The public is not that dumb. And we fans would like to see, like, racing.

Thanks, FIA. Way to go. You have done a disservice to racing, and have dealt a cruel blow to the very enthusiastic Aussie fans.

F1 could be more green and allow better racing by limiting the gross weight of people and equipment each team is allowed to bring to a race. Reducing gross tonnage on a jet transport would reduce carbon footprint far more than this stupid fuel flow limit during the race.
You can be a critical fan without being a Critic... Or can you? Quit your b'tchn and enjoy the racing :D

It was a fun race. Bottas was cool.

A while ago I had a "green championship" idea for Indycar that I think would be applicable to F1:

Basically, all cars would be equipped with a fuel meter as they are now, but would be allowed to race and refuel as normal. At the end of each Grand Prix, the "efficiency rating" would be calculated, which would simply be distance completed divided by the amount of fuel used for all cars that finished (perhaps with a deduction for non-lead lap cars). That ranking would award points the same as the driver's and constructor's championships and would essentially be a third title on the line for the season.

Under this system, efficiency and economy would be rewarded, but the racing would not be compromised. IMHO.

Definitely. And Magnussen! And Ricciardo, fuel snafu or not.

                          That's an excellent idea.

Neat idea, but what's the incentive? Money, I guess?

I don't get why you limit fuel flow. Just make a FIA approved standard fuel tank and tell them you can fill it or not, but thats the max fuel you get at the start of the race. Use as much or little as you want, but you aint getting more. Then the FIA can set the max fuel use based on tank size.
