Formula 1 will award double points for its final round from the 2014 season in an effort to keep championship battles open longer

My immediate reaction: groan and "oh no"

This and other regulation changes are summarised here:

The FIA is the governing body of motor sport and promotes safe, sustainable and accessible mobility for all road users across the world. It works across three areas: Sport, Mobility and Campaigns.

I must say I strongly dislike 2 of them (double points last race and numbers for the duration of a career), and the others I'm fairly ambivalent about. I appreciate the idea of a cost cap, but I have my doubts about its application.

I dispise the double points at the finale. There is no racing rationale for it. Just another contrived gimmick a la NASCAR. They may as well instigate competition cautions and green-white-checker as well.

I think the driver number idea is fine, except it could be unfair to base any needed tie-breakers just on last season's finish place.

The double points idea is just DUMB!

I think a fine addition to ending the season with a double points race, would be to also start the season with a double points race. Then just to spice it up, let's double the points for all the other races in between.

At this rate, I could be Bernie's successor...

I didn't think they had a dumber idea than permanent driver numbers, but I was wrong. Face it Bernie, you sport is horribly boring.

wow, epically stupid idea… glad to know us Americans do not have a monopoly on dumb motor sports points schemes….

Thy could try to do something to equalize the competition a little and perhaps police the rules a little better (or make the cars a little more "cheat proof")… Sorry, Vettel is great and so is Newey - but they are THAT good - there has to be circumvention of the rules contributing to the boring point races….

                If they want stupid ideas:
mandate randomly selected tires (including compounds),
make teammates switch cars on race morning occasionally,
randomly mix the race grid on race dates within 2 days of a full moon,
ban car to pit communication by anything but pit board,
                standardize the steering wheel,
make last year's world champion carry 20 extra pounds and/or wear two left shoes on race day…
extra points for balancing glass of champagne on rear wing for entire parade lap
take 2 pints of fuel away from (or add it to) 5 random cars at each race - don't announce who until the cars fuel up on race morning
reset the point after 3/4 of the races are done and have a shootout between the top 20% of the field for the remaining races
                double the points for Monaco

                  Is Bernie channeling Brian France???

Have you ever seen them together?? Perhaps as the Ecclestone body is "aging out" the life form that inhabits it decided to build a new body to see it through the next generation of Earth based racing????

I have a theory (hear me out please!). Jean Todt recently complained that there was too much focus on the high profile motorsports under the FIA banner (namely F1). Maybe this is an attempt to spread the interest across to other series?

My immediate reaction was substantially more profane than that. On the other hand, HEY!!! We got us a Chase!

Double points. DRS. Push-to-pass. Lucky Dog. Green, white, checker. For Pete's sake, if auto racing is dying, can't we at least let it slip away with some dignity?

Nah, the driver numbers was just dumb. Double points is insane. The lads who came up with this need immediate brain scans.
