  • Kimi back in red

It's being reported that the Kimi to Ferrari deal is done:

Kimi Raikkonen joins Fernando Alonso at Ferrari in 2014 as Felipe Massa announces his departure.

Team: Kimi, Fernando is faster than you
Kimi: Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing.

If he goes back to Ferrari that will be very interesting. How much was he paid by Ferrari in 2010 not to race? I remember it was a lot. Now Ferrari wants the iceman back.

For some reason I can't imagine Ferrari hiring both Alonso and Kimi at the same time. I believe if Ferrari hires Kimi that means Alonso is out. It's been rumored that Alonso critical comments about the team has taken it toll and rumors about Alonso taking his sponsors somewhere else have been circulating as well. I wouldn't be surprised Ferrari's line up would be all new in 2014 with someone like Hulk in the second seat.

I can't picture them both on the same team. Alonso's time at McLaren demonstrated that he needs to be the undisputed number 1 on a team or he ceases to work and play well with others. And Kimi's probably not going to lay down for that and be the obedient number 2.

Felipe has confirmed he will not be at Ferrari in 2014. Hope he lands a drive somewhere where he is permitted to race full on, & not be there primarily to help a 'favoured' team mate.

Kimi & Alonso at Ferrari would miff Alonso I think, a challenger for his #1 status in the team no doubt could unsettle his standing. Kimi would just get on with it! jmo

Where does Alonso go at this point then, if it doesn't work? McLaren? Does Red Bull have anything in writing with Riccardo? If not would his relationship be worse with Vettel than Alonso? Either way interesting stuff. I'm still holding out hope that if it can't be Kimi at Red Bull than let it be Alonso just for the entertainment of it. Or, Kimi and Alonso at Ferrari, which do you guys think would cause the most fireworks?

It seems to be pretty solid but this is F1 so never know what can happen. I've seen "solid" signings melt away at the chance to sign a better driver so never know. If Alonso does move from his Ferrari seat I think the next best open seat would be Lotus which is an oddity in itself since that would be the second time Alonso has returned to this team in his career even though the name is different now. I haven't heard anything about McLaren changing drivers so I expect it to stay the same for 2014.

I agree. Always thought the rumors were a way to push Lotus to get a deal sorted out for Kimi.

Alonso and Kimi on the same team will certainly be worth the price of admission. If Ferrari can provide a quick car (and engine) they would have 2 guys who usually finish and finish well. I think Alonso is desperate for help in developing the car and is more mature than his McLaren days.

This should be fun. Kimi is walking into Alonso's team, so Alonso is not in a similar position to when he was at McLaren (where Lewis had the history with team management). The knock on Kimi last time is that he did not participate much in car development and/or wasn't very good at it. Alonso is supposedly much more involved with the team. After being a bit dissappointing vs. Massa during his prior stint at Ferrari, it will be interesting to see how quick Kimi is vs. Alonso.

As to the speculation that Alonso is leaving--no way. He has nowhere to go. Lotus is a step backwards and supposely Kimi left because they did not have their finances and technical team in order. I don't see Alonso going to Red Bull. I doubt Vettel would be willing to play along, and it seems like Vettel has a lot of control. That leaves McLaren and Mercedes. Been there, done that with McLaren--can't see that pair getting together again, plus McLaren doesn't look like a player right now. Mercedes has Lewis, and that pairing didn't work out before.

Agreed. Both have very strong personalities and I can only see this as another Lauda/Reutemann, Jones/Reutemann, Prost/Senna, Piquet/Mansell and Alonso/Hamilton (imagine that?)

I don't want to wish this season away yet, but I'm really looking forward to the drama coming out of Ferrari next year.
