    Hamilton's books suffers fans backlash?

    Friday 11th April 2008

It's been a rather disappointing week for Lewis Hamilton, starting with his Bahrain GP and ending with the news that sales of his autobiography aren't going all that well.

In fact sales are so bad that the book, 'Lewis Hamilton: My Story', which would have cost £20 four months when it was first published is now being flogged for just 99p.

According to the Daily Mail, Home Bargains is so desperate to get rid of their 50,000 copies to make room for new stock, that they are have cut the price to less than a pound.

"I'm not surprised to see his book struggling after he came out with all that nonsense about leaving the country because of his fans," F1 fan Steve Barnes told the newspaper.

"I'm a big racing fan, but even at 99p it's overpriced for someone who holds his fans in such low esteem."

British fans were - and appear to still be - angered by Hamilton's move to Switzerland at the end of last year, which he said was in order to avoid being pestered by fans.

"You really struggle to live a normal life," the McLaren driver said at the time.

    Interesting.

Even Schumacher knew where to vacation, but at least he didnt move out of his country with wife and kids.....with Hamilton, its just him, no wife nor kids right?

Chop Scheuy moved to Switzerland and Ralfie Boy jumped to Austria all for tax reasons, just like Lewis...No one stays on the top of the book charts forever and for sure Lewis was paid a nice upfront retainer...

Thanks Ferris, I stand corrected. Hey, at least Hammy is in good company ...no?

Similar to Hamilton's situation, I think Indy-Kiwi had to move to the States because his fans were bothering him too much in New Zealand. And in another conicedence, his book Cold Fuel = Global Warming is rumored to be collecting dust on the shelves of bookstores throughout the country.

Their is something to be said about this as I asked IndyKiwi about taxes one day and he said "what taxes...it was either the States of Monaco"

                Ok lads, let me respond:
                1. My move to the USA was (mostly) voluntary!
                2. The only fans I had in NZ ran on 220V
                3. At one time the global warming thing was rather controversial, but with each passing day, a few more critics melt away as more evidence mounts (or maybe they just plunge their heads a little further into the sand - hard to tell which it is).
                4. Does a track forum thread about 20 pages long constitute a book? What was the title, "Science and statistics for dummies"?
                5. My book sales are going to have to really pick up to support a lifestyle in Monaco. I spent a days salary on an ice cream there one time!

Sorry, but anytime New Zealand and Kyoto comes up - I chuckle.

Apparently, methane from sheep is NZ's greatest greenhouse gas problem!
                  And don't forget the heat!

Anybody consider that perhaps the book was just badly written? If it was written poorly, word gets around and kills sales.

Well yeah, that and the fact it's more than a little presumptuous to write the story of one's life at the age of 22. Personally, I didn't hit my peak and think about writing a book about it until at least 24!!

Ha ha - I think that is factually correct. But also let's not forget the fact that gas is about $5/gal and there are very few Suburbans and Hummers on the road. Then we'd give those sheep a run for their methane!

There were about 8 books that came out at once, think it rather saturated the small F1 market. (I'm not actually sure whether he had a hand in any of them)

I doubt very much that Lewis had the idea or the desire to publish a book of his life. Not that it makes it right, but Danica published the book of her life at about the same age after leading the 500 in 2005. I think popular success causes publishers to come out of the woodwork offering $$ to ghost write and publish the book of your life. The key is to write it fast and get it out there while you're still hot. The downside is that fast writing by ghostwriters with mediocre skills leads to a dull book.
