    A very different time.

They didn't know what they didnt know.

That fence is all but useless.

Hay bales would have been safer which ain't saying much.

That fence is the ultimate in spectator safety. If a car hits it, the pieces won't be big enough to hurt anyone.

At least there is a guard rail. Check out some of the images from the 1970 Mexican GP.

Oh, there were guardrails at Mexico, it's just you can't see'em because of the people sitting in front of them...

There's a yellow light system set up, I assume to warn of problems around the corner. That's pretty cutting-edge for its time.

I hope somebody doesn't have a few too many cosmos at that establishment on the left and stumbles out straight into race traffic.

I'd 100% shoot from that spot for at least a few minutes. I once walked up the backside of the banking of turn one at a dirt track to shoot unobstructed, next to the end of the guardrail and catch fence, so I wasn't really in danger. No one said I couldn't walk over there, the gate was open, and no one commented afterword. Got some good shots, but I only did it once, and during hotlaps.

I had a hotpass at Dover a few times.. I would walk from pit entrance to the Xfinity garage without a barrier from the cars on track for 10 yards or so.. That was nuts

Sam Posey describes racing at 1970 LeMans in the pouring rain in a violent Ferarri 512, where he finished 4th with Ronnie Bucknum, "and we were just glad to be alive when it was over." Out there in the deluge, Vic Elford's 917 smoked him and promptly got smaller in the distance. Sam pondered it. His car is no faster, he's pretty good but so am I...dude is just braver than me...

I hope they put their cigarettes out before shooting. you know, the gasoline, if there's a crash. 😉
                      And don't forget the heat!

It looks tricky to smoke in that position.

That being said, it was (basically) France in the 1960's so I wouldn't be surprised if people still tried

Well, that's the exit of the chicane, the cars are going away from that scene. They've just traveled down a straight on the right and made a left turn. The straight has a stout wall and fence. (Ask Conor Daly.) There's extremely minimal chance a car would head in their direction.

Yes, that's all very clear from the photo...
