  • If you had to pick one vintage event in 2022

Hi, I was a member here at TF (among other places) back in the 2000's but drifted away from motorsport in general aside from catching the 500 on TV. I want to attend at least one vintage race this year, preferably one with the most Indy cars and prototypes. Is the event at Indy in June the best and suitable for an overnight camper on a motorcycle? What about the Walter Mitty at Road Atlanta or the Classic 24 at Daytona?

I don't think one would see many Indy cars or prototypes at the SVRA Brickyard event (June). It's a great event, but we're starting to see less and less of those types of cars. Plus they don't do the oval sessions anymore....at least they didn't the last time. Even in its first few years, I don't recall a lot of GTP/Lights cars there.

I do know that the historic 24 is pretty good.

Agree-I attended several of the SVRA events not many GTP cars. And insurance concerns plus the crash of a vintage eagle at Legends day a couple years ago appears to have quashed the vintage runs on the oval. I hear Millers at Milwaukee is a fun time, and there was a vintage event at CA Speedway that appeared intriguing.

I attend the Weathertech Brian Redman event. Lots of variety and Indy Cars do show up. The Old Indy cars get their own spot to display their roadsters and earlier rear engines cars. They run some exhibition laps.

          And this year:

The WeatherTech® International Challenge road race features over 400 cars competing in several groups. The 2022 International Challenge at Road America will also feature a special All American Racers (AAR) Eagle racer reunion. AAR designed and built just 158 Eagle racing cars between 1965 and 2012. Come out to Road America to witness this impressive racing legacy

The Friday and Saturday night displays in the village of Elkhart Lake are really nice too. The cars are escorted from the track down the highway into town and the streets are packed with beautiful cars and people.

Thanks guys for the info. I really don't think I want to ride a loud Ninja 1000 wearing Supertrapp mufflers all the way from Houston to Road America

Man, I have video from Speedchannel/Speed of historic races in the day and it sucks to know the era of GTP and open wheel vintage competition is gone.

Doctorindy I remember you from back when.

At Elkhart at the street show I talked to two guys with and OLD Indian and an OLD Harley in vintage unrestored condition. They road them from the west coast.

And there is plenty of real vintage racing on track.
My avatar is a picture I took when about 16 Can-Am cars were in the paddock staging lane ready to go racing.
And vintage F-1 cars are there. Seeing a Niki Lauda Ferrari on track and then in the paddock with the skins removed is a treat. Ya never know what people will bring.
The AAR thing this year will bring some rare and special cars.

Yeah nah. Sheesh! How do I find an entrant in my area that needs a volunteer wrench? Screenshot_2021-12-07-17-26-37-485.jpg

Unfortunately without the oval exhibition there is not a lot of incentive to run a vintage Indy car at the SVRA event. Especially when many older cars were never designed to run a road course.

I really have to make that this year, 2 hour drive for me.

IMSA GTP absolutely smokes P1 car, or is that a P2 car? Looks like the Porsche entires run by Penske.
