    Elmer George was known to have some temper issues, as evidenced by some of the above. He was born in Oklahoma, but like so many dust bowl refugees, grew up in California. He began racing at Salinas, California in track roadsters/hot rods, and moved up from there. He headed to the Midwest with his friend and fellow dust bowl transplant and Salinas resident, Johnny Key. Key won 54 features on the California Stock Car circuit in the 1952 season.

      I’d love to learn more.... I’ve read the high-level versions in the past but certainly appreciate there are likely other nuances and tidbits that would take this story to a whole new level.
