  • Can you believe it was 24 years ago today ... IRL first race.

Here is the qualifying show many never saw.

    Great video!

I found the qualifying interesting, along with the commentary, but REALLY enjoyed the Formula Ford 2000 race that followed. Who knew that Sam Schmidt had won a race at that track which would later bite him so hard?! Not to mention a few other future Indycar racers in the F2000 lineup. Very cool.

I remember jumping off the couch when Tony Stewart took the lead in the race. I had followed his career on Thursday Night Thunder and was pumped to see him and Davey Hamilton get a shot at Indy Cars. Good times.

I was at the race and listened almost exclusively to Tony's radio on the scanner. It was amazing to see him blazing around the track while he tried to figure out which button the crew wanted him to push. They were literally telling him where to find it.

I was mostly intrigued by the mix of drivers. Stewart, Lazier, Sharp, Hamilton, Parsons...and David Kudrave, who I used to watch running Formula Russell back in SoCal. He was a pretty decent road racer.

The front stretch and turns 1 & 3 have been converted to parking lot space. The rest of it is now a grassy, vacant lot.
