  • 500 stat trivia of interest to possibly only Donald Davidson

Watching the banquet last night I wondered how often the runner up and third place drivers were former winners. So I looked it up. Since WWII, current and former 500 winners finished 1-2-3 a total of 16 times:

    2019
    2012
    2004
    2003
    1994
    1988
    1983
    1978
    1977
    1976
    1975
    1970
    1965
    1957
    1952
    1950

(There should probably be an asterisk, because it includes future winners, which means should 2019 4th place finisher Joseph Newgarden win in the future, the tally would change)

Twice positions 1-4 were drivers whose faces are on the Borg-Warner:

    2007

    1st - Dario Franchitti
    2nd - Scott Dixon
    3rd - Helio Castroneves
    4th - Sam Hornish

    1963

    1st - Parnelli Jones
    2nd - Jim Clark
    3rd - A.J.Foyt
    4th - Roger Ward

On one occasion positions 1-6 were filled by current, former and future winners. Without looking it up, any guesses?

(I didn’t bother tallying results prior to WW2, as those winners and drivers are largely unfamiliar to me…but it’s possible there are other 1-2-3 finishes among winners in 500 history.)

To your last question, the answer is 1990. A very impressive list!!

    Luyendyk
    Rahal
    Fittipaldi
    Little Al
    Rick Mears
    AJ Foyt
    --Paul Dalbey

Different men, from vastly different backgrounds, focused on the same goal – a white line painted on a yard of brick 500 miles ahead.

Both of these are incorrect. Scott Dixon wouldn't be added to the Borg-Warner until after 2008 and Jim Clark wasn't until after 1965.

Note the comment in the parentheses, where it states the list includes future winners, which is why it was noted 2019 is still in flux pending future wins by drivers who will likely be active for years to come.

My fault. I apparently glossed right over that. I thought you were suggesting positions 1-4 were filled by drivers who had already won the race previously. Oops.

It does point up the value of experience...
