  • Need School paper help

Hello, Dad is letting me post a question here.
I am writing a report on Ford Model T's.
Does anyone know if a Model T ever raced in the Indy 500?
I don't think they were ever a pace car.
My grandpa said that there were Model T race cars but didn't think they ever raced at Indy.

If anyone knows, I will put it in my report.
    I like racing.

Hi Nate! I did a quick Yahoo! search on "Ford Model "T" in racing". This is the first thing that came up. Hope it helps ya!

Nate: I couldn't find any record of a Model T pace car for the race.

        Hi Nate,

My company, Artemis Images, preserves photographs and photographic archives. I did a search on our main site, Artemis Images
and found quite a few photos of Model T's on our site.

I thought I would pass the link along to you and if you would like to use the photographs in your research paper, feel free. Just note that they are part of the Artemis Images/ATD Group archive. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a Private Message and I will get right back to you.

An interesting sidenote, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was won by Noel Bullock in 1922 driving a home modified, Model T, that was later known as the "Tin Lizzie". (I posted the photo below)

Here is the link to just the Model T photos:

Good Luck and we look forward to reading your paper when completed...maybe you can even post it here on the Nostalgia forum!!

Ford Model A's and Ford Model T's on a test track.

Noel was practically laughed off the hill when he showed up at the 1922 event with a home built car. He even hand painted the #24 at the start when another racer commented that he needed a number. He won in what later became known as "Tin Lizzie".

I know of at least two:

          L.L. Corum drove a T to 5th place once in the '20s

Stirling Moss's father drove one in the 20's too.

One was famous for having finished the race with a front spring
stolen from a car in the parking lot.

I'll get back to you with more info this evening.

Most of the Ford Model T engines, that raced at Indy, in the 20s used a Frontenac cylinder head built, oddly enough, by the Chevrolet Bros. The Fronty- Fords were also quite successful on the short tracks all across America.

              OK:

              1922: 2 raced
              1923: 1 raced, 1 DNQ
              1924: 3 raced, 3 DNQ
              1925: 1 raced
              1926: 1 raced
              1930: 1 raced
              1931: 1 raced

              found these stats at www.motorsport.com

the 1930 entry is listed as simply a Ford,
model not specified. This is the car which
              used the "borrowed" front spring.
The story is related inStrange but True Auto Racing Stories by Al Powell, where
the car is described as a "T" entered by
Arthur Chevrolet and that it could have
won if not for the long pit stop to
              change the spring

                Nate,

that website has a pretty good history of the Ford - Frontec Model T's (the ones modified with equipment manufactured by the Chevrolet brothers) and their racing history.

Hope this will help some more and we are all looking forward to seeing your paper when you finish it.

OOOPS, sorry, I just noticed that someone else had already listed that website.
But good luck with your report and hope everyone here has a great holiday season this year.

... and supposedly it was returned to the car after the race without the owner ever knowing part of his car raced in the Indy 500
