  • Hey, Two Of The All Time Greats

I don't believe anyone would argue about Foyt and Al Unser being two of the all time great open wheel drivers.

The accomplishments of these talented drivers would, and have, filled many books of open wheel racing lore.

During their illustrious both have accomplished one thing no other driver in the history of open wheel racing has ever done.

    Do you know the answer?

    Hey Mr. Ralstin

...don't know if it is the answer you're looking for, but knowing your background, I'll guess that these two guys are the only ones to win Indy on different brands of tires.

I'm not smart enough to give a better answer than that, but if I wait and think about it, the right answer will already be posted!!!

Won Indy over a 16 year time span?

        I can't figure it out.

We know Mears won 4 indy's so that is not it.

I know they are the only 4 time winners of the Indy 500 who also won championship races on the dirt tracks, but that isn't it I don't think.

I will sit back and wait!

They were related, having both gone to different schools at the same time ...?

Well, I found this out, but in my research, I also found the same applied to Bobby Unser, too. In 1964, AJ won the Indy car race at Phoenix and also won at Indy. In 1968, Bobby won at Phoenix and also at Indy. In 1970 and 1971, Al Unser (Sr) won at Phoenix and also at Indy. Is this what you were looking for?

Hey, you guys are missing the target, let alone hitting a bullseye.

I will give you a little hint hint, it two decades for Big Al to catch up with the Texan.

I was going to guess number of ex-wives, but then remembered AJ has been slightly more monogamous than the Unser boys.

They both retired at Indy during the month of May without participating in the 500 the year they retired.

                    wrong, I know.

2 decades later for Big Al?

                    Me stumped.

I can think of the one thing AJ did that Big Al or Rick didn't: Win two of his 500's with roadsters. Other than that, ya got me!

Is it some kind of a record set in rental cars?

Okay one more hint. and if this isn't a give away you'll never learn the answer from me.

Foyt turned the trick in 1964 and 1965.

                            Great question Mr. Ralston.

My guess is they were the only two 500 winners to win the Hoosier 100 back to back.....

                            ...love them 'big cars'
