  • Hey, Just 94 Years & 48 Days Later

It was August 13 , 1909 when Ed Lingenfelder rolled up yo the starting line at Carl Fisher's brand spanking new 2-1/2 Indianapolis Motor Speedway to successfully run 25 miles in 25 minutes.

It was a demonstration run, at the request of Carl Fisher, in an effort to sell more tickets for the Aug. 14, 1909 scheduled MOTORCYCLE RACES at the Speedway.

The first scheduled "motorsports event" to held at Fisher's newly completed 2-1/2 mile rectangle.

Now On Oct. 2, 2003, a mere 94 years and 48 days later, the motorcycles have returned to the most famous 2-1/2 mile race track in the World !

Good point. The original design for the 500 speedway incorporated a road course that would utilize part of the oval plus an infield portion. 90 some years later they ran the first F1 race.

It has been awhile since I seen the drawing, but I think I remember saying to myself that I liked that road course better than the one they came up with.

        I didn't know that.

Me too. But the south straight would have bisected the current museum.

          Which could be interesting, too...

Now all we would need is a balloon race and we'd really have all the bases covered...

The winning balloon way back when landed, if I'm not mistaken, not far from where I'm at right now, in Ashland City, Tennessee.
