When you think about it though

    Ganassi
    Foyt
    Penske
    Rahal
    Andretti

Are all owners who were respectable racers in their own right.

Well....at least Foyt and Andretti were.

I meant racers who have done at least decently, Penske was decent as a sportscar racer before he became an owner.

Ganassi, when he could fit into a race car did start in several Indy 500's, so although he wasn't the greatest, hes one of only 600 and something people to ever start the 500.

Rahal, 3 national championships and 1 Indy 500.

      Foyt....

Andretti. F1, CART, and IRL starts, CART champion, all time CART win leader.

All were respectable drivers before they became owners.

        Touche.

But how Gana$$i ever wound up driving for PP is beyond me. Or maybe it isn't. Humongous step down from Mario to Cheep.

(btw, Racin Gardner and Dr. Jack started in the Indy 500 too....)

But my point was that the fellows taking the risks out there probably make better owners than the suits. Look at Ray as an example. Everyone seems to think he was Mr. Crash when driving other cars, but as a team owner, he's done pretty amazingly for having one car. He's learned to be frugal, resourceful, budget, make the most with what he's got. I like that approach to racing. Penske's record is impressive, but I have to wonder how much easier it is for him with that kind of dough. Not to suggest he's doing anything wrong--if I had the $ to blow on research and development, I'd engineer my way to the front, too. I just don't think it ought to be like that is all. I liked the days when Jimmy Kite could hop into a piece of ___ Scandia tub and run down Tony Stewart. The IRL has definitely transmogrified along the way. There are some good things about it, but alot's definitely been lost.

The Greg Ray who used to wreck a lot of cars, also used to win races, he doesn't do that anymore.

Truthfully, the Foyt most of us know, say the last 25 years or so, has never not been a car owner.

I can't believe I used that choice of words. It sounds like something he would have said.

Penske was better than just "decent".

You got that right. He was USRRC champion when that was a big deal, he won at Nassau when that was a big deal and he won in the West coast pro races that evolved into the Can Am.

And Mo Nunn raced very competitvely in F3, before running out of funding and moving into privateering and then manufacture.
