  • I'm Famous! Well, My Dad Is Anyway!

I've been helping Spencer Riggs from Belmont Publishing put together a 2004 calendar featuring my late father's racing photo collection.

Mr. Riggs says the images are fantastic, and should look great in the upcoming calendar, which will probably be printed on glossy paper this time around. (In previous years it was printed with a matte type paper)

Anyhoo, just thought I'd update you all. I'll let you know where and when you can get a copy for yourself.

In case you forgot, the photo collection can be found by clicking my homepage icon.

I look forward to getting a couple of copies of that calender. I've never seen one before, but you know how much I love your Dad's photos so I'm certain it's going to be a good one.

Thanks for keeping us informed on this.

              Calendar Update

Mr. Riggs came by the house today while I was at work and dropped off a rough draft of the calendar.

Here's how it breaks down so far. For the twelve calendar month pages, there are 5 images that my dad actually took, some of which are smaller inserts placed on top of the featured picture. Then there are 5 shots (by other photogs) from my collection, and again, some of these are inserts.

There's a nice narrative and photo tribute to old Pops at the back of the calendar, featuring 7 more examples of Dad's stuff, and a groovy shot of him at the IMS wearing a shirt that my mom made for him. (Mom always hated the shirt, but Pops loved it and wore it often)

I'm hoping to meet Mr. Riggs sometime next week. Hopefully I can twist his arm to put more of my old man's stuff in the calendar.

I'll let you folks know when this thing is launched. I think it's going to be good.

BTW...Lenny, I'll do that! Maybe we can get this thing to go to a second printing!!

                  Calendar Update: It's Out!

                  Ladies and Gents:

The calendar is now available for sale. It's officially called "Bud Williams Hard Chargers of Sprint Car Racing." It is printed on heavy glossy stock and measures 11"x17" when opened. All photos are black and white. See my earlier post regarding photo breakdown.

You can purchase the calendar at the following address:

                  Belmont Publishers
"Bud Williams Hard Chargers of Sprint Car Racing."
                  1224 S. Belmont Ave.
                  Indianapolis IN 46221

$14.95 (check or money order, which includes shipping)

10% of the profits will go to The Indy 500 Oldtimers Club and The Indiana University Cancer Research Center.

I personally will receive nothing from the sale of this calendar. I got involved in this project for the love of the sport and for the memory of my father.

Eag: If this post is inappropriate, feel free to nuke it. No hard feelings here.

                    Re: Calendar Update: It's Out!

Great! Thanks for the address. I'll place an order this weekend.

If you haven't seen the fine work of Mr. Zoomie's father, click on his 'www' link. A fabulous collection. Nothing keeps memories alive like fine photography. It sounds like it all goes for a good cause too.

                        THANKS!!

Special thanks to Len Calinoff and John LeVan at www.openwheelracing.com for their gratis advertisement for the calendar.

Kudos also to Dave Zortman at www.thevintageracer.com and The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing www.emmr.org for his generous assistance in promoting the project.

These gentlemen have all eagerly come forward to help me spread the word about the calendar. Please visit their sites and patronize their sponsors. You won't be disappointed.

Also, I'd like to thank Eagle104 and the powers-that-be here at Trackforum for allowing me to shamelessly plug my little obsession. Please patronize their sponsors as well.

Special recognition to the "mad Austrian" at Fineline Printing for taking the time to do it right.

A big atta-boy to L. Spencer Riggs of Belmont Publishers for taking the raw material and putting together something special. Mr. Riggs is a man of his word and delivered on every promise he made to me.

Finally, a big hug and a thank you to the original " Walter Zoomie," my dad. I miss you, Pops.

As my mother said to me yesterday..."Your father would be so proud."

                        Sincerely and Semper Fidelis,

                        Paul A. Johnson
