      In doing a quick search, which only took a few minutes, I ran across an item in a Los Angeles Times motorsports column mentioning the two big TV contracts for racing telecasts in 1970, with ABC slating 9 NASCAR races and TVS 10 USAC Championship races.
      The first Michigan 500 was in 1981. I know because I was there. Previous races were run as 2 heats...

          That was a d'oh moment on my part. I meant to type '200' (dunno why I managed to type '500' unless it was from not having enough coffee in me )

          MIS ran races at many different distances (250, 200, 150, twin 125s, twin 200s), with standalone 200 milers being most common. The 1972 race I was referring to was a scheduled 200-mile race. It was the one Merle Bettenhausen had his crash in.

              As I remember, the double events led up to the 500 mile race. People were skeptical of the cars lasting 500 miles at Michigan...
