  • Any Owners of Vintage Cars Here?

My wife will be turning 60 in April. Many years ago when we met she was driving a 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible. I was thinking it would be cool to surprise her with a similar car. Just to take it on short rides, mainly to local towns that have vintage car shows during the summer. Does anyone else here do that? Any good Internet forum sites to recommend?
A book fell on my head, and I only have my shelf to blame.

    Sorry, I can't help.
But, to comment, if that Comet had the available 289 in it, it was a real sleeper.

      Try this

Spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and customs to hoodlums worldwide.
"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved
body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting
      "...holy $^!+...what a ride!"

The Caliente was more the "luxury" Comet, it may have had a 289 with a 2 barrel, not sure, but certainly was not a sleeper. It was a very pretty car though, maroon ext., white interior.

When I was ten my family lived in the small town of Holbrook, AZ on the Colorado Plateau. In 1965 one of my dad's employees bought a bright red 289 Comet Cyclone. I still remember his name, Percy Keams. Percy was a full blood Navajo and his car was pretty big news in that small town.

He used to take me and my brothers for rides on 66 through the Painted Desert in the car, it was a real beauty and he kept it spotless.

Here's just the car you're looking for, it's in great condition and has your name all over it!

I'm surprised the asking price is just $14,500, that sounds very reasonable. If that's where the market is I'd say you have a good chance of finding a nice one for less than $20K.

That is a nice looking car, thanks. Brings up the whole issue of buying something long distance. I'll have to do some investigating but on the surface the price seems OK. I expect because it's not exactly a popular old car. Very nice, thanks.

I bought a car from a guy in Philly, it cost $850 to have it shipped to Dallas. Heck, call the guy and ask him if it's still for sale. You never know.

It sounds like a good deal. Front suspension component replacement is expensive, and it has a fresh motor.

Yes, the marketplace can be strange. The original Chevy Nomads and Pontiac Safaris come to mine. Same time frame, same technology, etc. but the Nomad always commanded a noticeably higher price for the same condition. I gather that in more recent times, people are waking up to this discrepancy.

Speaking of station wagons...the '57 Oldsmobile Fiesta wagon is one groovy ride.

                    Izzat cool or what?
