  • Racing novel from my youth - anyone?

In the early 60's, as a little kid, I recall reading some paperback novels about racing. One of them was about a teenager who bought a wrecked MG (TC I think) and brought it back to life. Ended up entering it in a local race and had an old guy (former racer maybe) drive it for him. The old guy may also have helped him rebuild it. Any other old timers here come across that book in their youth?
A book fell on my head, and I only have my shelf to blame.

Sure do, read it as a kid.

I'll see YOU at the races!

Very, very cool, thank you. I think I was in 8th grade when I read it.

I read, and loved, the teenager hotrodding books by Henry Gregor Felsen.

So did I, and I remember the Black Tiger books, too...

Let's not forget William Campbell Gault, author of "Rough Road To Glory", and "Dirt Track Summer" among others. Love the Felsen books and I remember the one about the MG.

So, are you going to buy a copy on ebay or Amazon?

What for, I already read it!

Seriously, it just popped into my head for some reason so I thought I would ask here if anyone else had read it. Just nostalgia purposes. Last night I pulled my copy of Vukovich off the shelf and started rereading that. Already some interesting facts in the first 30 pages or so. Drake's first midget engine started with a H-D bottom end, to compete with the existing Offy midget. Also the original Offy midget engine was developed by request of race promoter Gilmore (forget first name) because the boat motors being used created so much smoke it was hard to see the cars racing. Or so the book says anyways.

The only book close to being about racing in my local library when I was a kid, was "Hot Rod" by Henry Gregor Felsen.

And which book is this? One about Vuky...the legendary Indy champion?

I remember the film (movie if you prefer) The Green Helmet and that it was made in black and white! I also remember reading Speed Six.

Anyone remember the two books by Mike Hawthorn (Yes the 1958 World Champion!) Carlotti Joins the Team and Carlotti Takes the Wheel.
