  • Bignotti flat six...

I'm interested in information regarding a flat-six, front engine project by George Bignotti for Lindsey Hopkins and Sherman Armstrong....not sure of the dates, but think sometime in '70s. Any input would be appreciated.

Well...I know that there was an interesting entry in the 78 500, for Sherman Armstrong, to have been driven by Mel Kenyon, which is I imagine why you're asking this... Don't have any more info other than that it was in the entry list printed in the 1978 program, I remember seeing it.

Mac Miller would know, but he doesn't come around here much.

I've seen photos somewhere. Cooling fan sticking up between the front wheels.
Believe it was a modified Porsche engine..

Think you might be referring to the twin Porsche-engined car entered in 1966

Recall that I have read somewhere in the 1977 yearbook that the Offy Fourbanger was considered to be replaced by a 6. Given the fact that Bignotti/Pattrick were nvolved with the finances of the next to last variant on the Offy (the DGS) perhaps Bignaotti was part of that plan too.
But instead of a six, Drake engineering came with the DT160 V8 instead in 1978.

Could be wrong but I don't believe a front-engine Indy car was ever planned for the engine. As the story is told, the project died on the dyno. It is also said that the Speedway Hall of Fame now owns the pieces. The engine was apparently a collaboration of George Bignotti and Ron Huettels of Sesco.

Definitely NOT the twin Porsch.....this project was much later. Still gathering details.

Ah yes. That's the photo I had in mind.
