  • Indy car transportation

While racing certainly is a sport that attracts its fans by the events which take place out on the racetrack, it is always fascinating to look behind the scenes at just how the sport functions.
The posts about Lee Wallard in a previous thread reminded me of a photo from May 1951 which shows the Bellanger Kurtis placed on a simple rig attached to a passenger car. This certainly demonstrates how much simpler auto racing was back then compared to what the teams have now.
There is also a story about Andy Granatelli's initial Indy effort back in 1946 which was driven by Danny Cladis. Didn't they actually drive the entered car from Chicago to Indy before the race? There must be many stories like this back from the days of the 30s.
I would really like to hear some stories from the insiders as it is quite interesting to think just how the ways of getting a car to the race have evolved over the decades.

I remember roadsters being trailered on open rigs like you can rent at U-Haul.

I remember coming back from The Milwaukee Mile and stopping at Mars Cheese Castle. In the lot, I got to pat the tail gas tank of Troy Ruttman's car. It was on an open trailer.

You know, they are going to tear down Mars Cheese Castle. But not to worry, they are moving east to make way for some sort of project. I loved that King of Clubs cheddar spread that they have.

Seeing a race car on an open trailer was always a cool thing as a kid, I don't see any youth checking out some enclosed trailer.
I'll see YOU at the races!

When gas got up around $4.00 a gallon a few years back I remember talking to a dirt late model team that had ditched their enclosed trailer. They went back to an open trailer but still managed to find room for the basic tires and tools required. They couldn't believe how much gas they saved by not pulling that aerodynamic brick trailer around behind them.

I have a photograph somewhere of AJ's '61 winning Bowes Seal Fast Special on an open single axle trailer being towed by a '61 Pontiac station wagon outside the old maing gate of the Speedway.

That's the kind of pic you could look at every day and see something new in it.

Anybody know what is run beneath the eave on the garages? Water?

Notice the dual nose wheels on the Foyt car trailer: That's an open Watson Dolly Trailer, he had a closed (Coffin) version too.

If I'm not mistaken Bobby Unser's winnig Rislone car was hauled on an open trailer, this is what, 1969? I'll look for a photo.
A book fell on my head, and I only have my shelf to blame.
