  • Hall Of Fame

Was just over in NASCAR.com and it appears NASCAR`s Hall Of Fame goes to some town in the Carolinas

Had a good laugh reading this article

" Racing is built here "

Ahum.....NASCAR was built there huh ?

I seem to recall NASCAR racing on the beaches of Daytona way before they were racing in the Carolinas

    Mr France must be proud

    "' Racing is built here'"

"Ahum.....NASCAR was built there huh ?"

Semantics, but there is a world of difference between "is" and "was." Charlotte, err, Lowe's is pretty much the home track for the majority of teams.

It makes sense. Daytona hosts a variety of different series, while most consider the Charlotte area as close to Ground Zero of today's Nascar as you can get.
"Foyt's mere presence is a punch in the face, an inoculation against milquestoast corporatism. There wasn't a car anywhere anyhow anytime that Foyt wouldn't put the boot to, and there hasn't been a race devised he couldn't win."

Is Canton, Ohio Ground Zero of today's NFL?

Is Cooperstown, New York Ground Zero of today's MLB?

The tradition for halls of fame is to put them in a place with the most historical significance to the founding of the sport or league.

And I agree that for NASCAR, it should be Daytona.

        Strange argument.

        Not sure I follow.

"Is Canton, Ohio Ground Zero of today's NFL?

Is Cooperstown, New York Ground Zero of today's MLB?"

Obviously not. There's no doubt in my mind that if neither existed before this year, and both were choosing places for the their respective HOFs, neither would be were they are at. It's about $$$.

        Is Charlotte for Nascar? Yes.

You think this was about tradition?

It should be if it follows the example of other major league sports.

If your point is that NASCAR doesn't care about tradition, then I agree with you.

            We agree on both counts.

I'm just more jaded. Remember, Kansas freaking City was one of the five finalists for the HOF site.

OTOH- I've always gotten a kick out of the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame being located in Talladega, Alabama.

              I understand.

I live in a city that has a Hall of Fame, but the inductions are always held in New York City.

The College Football Hall of Fame is in South Bend, IN , and despite that it is located near a college football stronghold (Notre Dame) it is very under-attended. I've been a couple of times and have enjoyed myself, but it is severly under-utilized and is always operating in the red. Not sure how long it will be around (probably until South Bend and St Joseph county get tired of picking up the slack).

I agree with the above posts, tradition????? Yeah, that's it, it isn't about this, is it???

A thought just crossed my ind about this Hall Of Fame deal.

Any thoughts about the awards dinner now being held at the Hall Of Fame instead of the Big Apple ?

Seems like the proper thing to do since that`s where the Hall is now going to be

Never could figure out why NASCAR held it in New York

My favorite part is how NASCAR (or it's independent contractors) let some racism slip into the fold.

                          Exposure, money, and something different.

I'm not gonna gloat, but I knew from day one that Charlotte would win. They put up the most money, the biggest bid, etc. Daytona may be where it should be historically, but if they want the HOF to operate in profit, they should put it in a highly populated location.

I'd venture to say that Canton, Cooperstown, Int'l Motorsports HOF (Talladega), and others, all suffer to attract attendance outside of special event periods, because none of them are close enough to big cities. Everybody and their uncle seems to show up at Canton the first weekend in August, but who the heck cares about the place outside of then. I'd doubt Talladega's museum get any significant visitors outside of the two race weekends.

I've been to the Daytona USA museum that's there now, and that place is a relative ghost town outside of the big race weekends. Now granted, they aren't too far from tourist town Orlando, and if they marketed enough, they could have had it there. But I don't see the HOF sustaining a huge crowd after the first year or so.

And don’t forget, in that same ‘tradition’ theme, that the Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, Massachusetts which is where Dr. Naismith first hung up that peach basket.

Food for thought. Where would you PHYSICALLY put the Formula 1 Hall of Fame? (I may be wrong, but I think it’s purely a theoretical HoF.)

Talk about a decision that could cause WW3!

I kind of wonder why they haven't inducted anyone yet. It's not like they have to have the building finished to start 'inducting' members. The R 'n' R HOF had members for years before the building in Cleveland was finished.
