Donnie Allison in the 18 is correct. The 02 is Dick Trickle in 1983.

My guess is oil. Those cars all ran dry sumps and it was common to mount the oil tank right behind the driver. Possibly a broken oil line.

Got it. I assumed that was 15-20 gallons of gasoline dumping out onto the headers

'course a one inch oil line would make some flame too

Especially if the engine's still running. I've also got some old ASA and ARCA stuff too if anyone is interested.

Ya reckon he backed in hard and broke the line?

I'm thinking the lines were zip tied to the cage along the drivers side of the cage and maybe tore loose as he ran backwards along the wall. Oil usually leaves that kind of black smoke and a lot of flame. He may have crushed the dry sump tank when he crushed the back end. They're made of spun aluminum and hold several gallons of oil.

....or, an oil line might have let go and that's what caused him to hit the wall. Seen that happen too.

Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

I haven't looked at these pictures in over 20 years.......I believe they are from the '87 Pocono race Richmond won......oddly enough these 4 photos were in line, what a difference a few years made
