  • Rain or no rain... Cali pulls 6.1

Didn't have the heart to post this over in Biz... (didn't want to kill the "merger" buzz)... Going over numbers for the WGC Match Play event on Sunday (up 67%, Thank You Tiger) and noticed that the rain delay for the Cali NASCAR event pulled a 6.1 overnight (4.7 mil HH)... granted, that is a slight drop of around 2% from last year... but also consider that is only 87 laps of coverage for a 3 hour booking window.

    Spring California ratings history:

    2005 7.9
    2006 7.4

Wow, the ratings for a NASCAR race in rain delay clobber what the Indy 500 gets.

Guess it was either the race or those over exposed Hollywood folks, huh?

Both - everyone was tuned in to get a glimpse of what Ashley Judd would be wearing in the rain .

Probably most people fell asleep before they could change the channel like me.
"Ninety-two years ago [the Indy 500] was probably like any other race," said 2005 winner Dan Wheldon. "But over time it's just created so many storylines and history for people of our generation that now it's just massive. People value that history and tradition and you just can't take that away."

That's actually pretty impressive for a race that was 2 1/2 hours delayed and then only got in 87 laps and two red flags before the day ended. NASCAR's actually off to a good start this year with the slight increase in Daytona ratings and now pulling this on what was arguably the lousiest day for racing in recent years.

Racing > Oscars. Maybe Tom's not as dumb as everyone thinks.

California or the first race after Daytona, has typically had the second highest ratings of the season.

True. But I can't recall California's spring race every being washed out like it was this week either. I doubt the Auto Club 500 will end up being the second highest rated race this year with a 6.1. Still the 6.1 was a great rating considering the delay, rain, 2x redflags...
