  • 1st SC practice at Phoenix

    A bit of a surprise...

PIERCE FASTEST IN FIRST PHOENIX SILVER CROWN
    PRACTICE

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Aaron Pierce led Friday’s
    two-hour Silver Crown practice
at Phoenix International Raceway, as nine cars
    took times in preparation for
    this weekend’s “Copper World Classic.”

Pierce, formerly of Daleville, Ind. who now calls
    this Valley area home,
clocked in at 27.372 seconds (131.521 mph) on the
    one-mile, leading veterans
Bud Kaeding and Jerry Coons Jr. in a session
    which featured more than 260
completed laps for the new generation cars.

“The car was really good,” said Pierce, who made
    45 trips around the track
in his No. 26 Sam Pierce Chevrolet/Bigelow
    Trailer Sales Riley/Chevy. “Once
the track got some rubber down, times started to
    get quicker. It was pretty
much just getting laps under our belts for
    everybody.

“The PDM Racing guys should be commended for
    getting the car prepared as
well as they did,” he added.

Pierce said the car’s drivability was close, if
    not unchanged, to the
    old-style Silver Crown car.

“I don’t feel the difference,” Pierce said. “They
    drive, I think, exactly
like the old cars did. You can’t be so tough on
the right rear, but all in
all, they’re great. They handle good and seem
like they’re going to be safe.
Hopefully we can keep all of them together and
    put on a good show.”

Donoso, of Santiago, Chile, who has extensive
time in the car, completed the
most laps of any driver with 50.

“Today was a good test,” Donoso said. “I needed
to get back in the car
because the last test was so long ago, but it was
a good test. At first, the
car was very loose, but we came in and made a
    change, and the car improved.”

Kaeding, whose crew was forced to load the car
for Phoenix with a hot engine
due to a time crunch, felt the cars drove
    differently than the old-style
machines, but was pleased with its drivability.

“It drives, steers and accelerates a little
    differently,” he said, “but it
still has four wheels, a steering wheel, brakes,
    you know, the works. I
think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m
    definitely looking forward to the
    year.

“The test was good, a lot better than I thought
    it would have been,” he
added. “We’re a lot closer than we thought we’d
    be at this stage too.”

Practice and qualifying for the “Copper World
    Classic” Silver Crown cars is
scheduled for Saturday with the 50-lap Silver
    Crown feature set for Sunday
    afternoon.

How do those speeds compare with the "outdated" SC cars?

Pierce is 11 mph slower than the 142 mph record held by Dave Steele.

9 cars........11 MPH off the pace......... 2 drivers with opposite opionins about how they handle.............fj9w8tvbdpsnveouierh3pi23gfv.kj v'rm ?????????

Actually, with the super high drag body, the small rear tire and the heavy armor plate chassis, there is not much chance of improvement in speed............ With these tanks going this slow, there is not much chance of anybody getting hurt, which was, purty much, the whole point of these things anyway............

The midgets should be able to outrun these guys by 6 to 8 MPH.......

Reminds me of the first IRL race run at Phoenix. Davey Hamilton qualified mid pack with a newly designed million dollar car and a pitful of engineers and mechanics, turning a lap of 160 mph. Two years earlier he lapped Phoenix in a Hyder-Hawk super-modified which cost under $100,000 at 158 mph. But Mac you must understand - this is progress!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Not good, in my opinion. Can't wait to see if the "outdated" SC cars get something going and have their own series. Rumors are that they do and rumors are that they don't have anything lined up. Who knows, for sure? Oh, and with those "speeds", and IF USAC keeps these "things", expect to see them at Indy real soon. AARRGGHH!

Don't forget the reason for these new cars was to get the series onto the bigger 1.5 mile type tracks and be safe.

c-7, I realize that was the original idea, to get them to run on larger tracks. But for these cars to be 11 MPH slower that the previous SC cars is, in my opinion, ridiculous. Face it, fans want speed. From what I see, these "cars" are failing to do so. Ssince the previous SC cars have not (as far as I know) run on any of the mile and a half "Cookie Cutter" tracks, it will be hard to compare speeds. Guess it would be like putting a 2 Cycle Go-Kart (previous SC cars) against a 4 Cycle Go-Kart (the new SC cars).
I'm anctions to see what the fan reaction is going to be, at Phoenix. Those fans will have more input than fans at the "Cookie Cutter" mile and a half tracks, who possibly have never seen the previous SC cars in action (NASCAR fans, ya know!). For race fans to get th eslightest amout of joy out of watching these "anchors" running around a big mile and a half track, I'd say that you would have to have a NASCAR Nextel Cup sized field - at least 40 cars. I don't see that happening, especially after seeing the "Speeds" turned in at Phoenix. Just my thoughts, on this, of course.

                    I'm keepin my mouth shut

bearing in mind that CWC 'Officials' told the supermod guys they needed 25 guaranteed starters to remain a part of the classic

The golden years of this CWC for me were when the supers, midgets, sc's and SouthWest Tour ran together (OW practice saw all three classes on the track at once) and all 4 finals on a bright desert Sunday.
(and Sat night, down the road a piece you got to see the best sprinters do their thing at Mannzy)

From carl s, above: "bearing in mind that CWC 'Officials' told the supermod guys they needed 25 guaranteed starters to remain a part of the classic"

My, how times and things change, huh? Please someone, post on here about the amount of fans that are drawn for this years event. Thanks!
What really is such a shame is that the "older" SC cars are not a part of this show. That would give a good idea as to what to expect. And they plan on running those "sleds" at Richmond which is only a 3/4 mile track? With the IRL changing into CART II, and God knows how many cars they'll be fielding in 2006, and with these "sleds" also on the program at Richmond, I just might stay at home that weekend. How many sprinters do they draw at Richmond?

Tommy, last year they had about 23 sprint cars. Hope you change your mind.

Tommy, I, too, hope you change your mind. I would like to meet you there. And, besides, someone needs to tail Danny and make sure he doesn't sit in a parking lot waiting for somebody that's already gone!

Well, I know the "boss" LeVan will probably want to go, and we usually go together. We missed it last yr. Guess I'll have to see how things are going around that time.
