I spent a lot of Saturday nights there as a kid. Hate to see the place torn down. It was definitely one of a kind, with the board inner guard rail and goofy NJ state laws governing racing. That place was especially exciting on any night with a full moon. I've never seen so many flips in one night anywhere else. Guys would cut the corner a little tight, hook the left front in that board fence, and launch up and over. Some of the best racing was the nights they would run 4 20 lap features for the modifieds. Awesome stuff! And they always drew for heat starting positions. No boring qualifying - just racing.
One of my favorite Flemington memories is the annual All Star League 100 lappers from 1967 through 1973. Flemington had a great field on its own. On these nights you added the likes of Lou Lazzaro, Ernie Gahan, and especially the Middletown guys like Will Cagle and Frankie Schneider. The place just rocked for those shows!
I basically grew up on the infield before we moved to PA, my dad was on the rescue squad and he would have his truck on the infield with one of those plastic kiddie pools in the back and I would splash around and watch the races.
