O’Reilly Midwest All Star Series to Require One-Way Radios

CAMARGO, IL (04-03-08) by Robert Cortum - Midwest All Star Series

The O’Reilly Midwest All Star Series would like to remind all drivers participating in sanctioned events in 2008 that they will be required to have a one-way radio. The new 2008 rule book that was released in January specifies the make and model of the radios which are quickly becoming an industry standard.

The announcement comes in preparation for the sophomore campaign for the Midwest All Star Series as they have an aggressive schedule of more than 20 events beginning April 11 at the Benton Race Park in Benton , Missouri . The addition of the one-way radios for all sanctioned All Star events was a decision based on two main factors, driver safety and race organization.

Drivers will be immediately alerted to yellow and red situations on the track to help slow down or stop the competition in the event of an emergency. Drivers will also be given the official line-up from the scoring tower after incidents to help speed up the process of getting lined up for restarts.

The O’Reilly Midwest All Star Series will have the radios available at all events throughout the season. A rental fee of $20.00 per event will be charged or teams may purchase the units for $85.00. This is the same unit used by the All Star Circuit of Champions, the World of Outlaws, and many local tracks who have implemented this device.

The O'Reilly All Stars are dedicated to bringing the fans a more organized show and the use of radios will help speed things along throughout the program as well as help to reduce or eliminate the need for fuel stops caused by unnecessary laps being run while lining up cars with a pit board. Putting on a good, efficient show goes a long way in the eyes of fans who like to be home at a decent hour after an event.

For the 2008 rules and schedule, visit www.midwestallstarseries.com or www.allstarsprint.com. Printed rule books will be available to teams at the first event, or by contacting a series official in advance.

      Big time Yea.

We started using them at New Egypt back around 2002 or 2003.

The drivers were furious at track mgmt for adding another expense tot heir investment.

As soon as they hear the eye in the sky telling them theres a car car sideways and parked in trun 2 as theyre riding the cushion in turn 1 they figured they made back the investment.

Fans like it because re-shuffling the deck takes one lap instead of 3

      or 4

      or 6

also we were able to save caution laps.

We could actually tell all the drivers we were going green this time by sometimes as they were heading into turn 3.
So instead of yet another 45 seconds of down time as they circle @ 30mph yet one more time , were were back to green.

Occasionally we even told drivers under green
that they were one more boneheaded move away from being black flagged for rough riding.

We even used them before the races started during track packing. Tell car #s X, Y, Z to pull up one lane to plopw thru some extra wet stuff. Tell everyonwe to work the top in. Knocks time off track packing.

Used properly one ways can knock probably 15-30 minutes of down time off a regular weekly show. No exagerration, I saw it all the time in person

One way radios are teh way to go these days

They use them at TMS dirt track for races with 200-300 cars. No arguing about hte lineups anymore. You line up where they tell you or you go to the pits. Works fantastic! They also have a one spin and you are out rule. You can actually spin and keep racing, but if they throw a yellow for you, you're gone.
Some people will do nearly anything in order to be able to not do anything.

At Grays Harbor in Washington, the rule is in heats or b-mains if your tires stop rolling you're done for that race.

Amazing how this keeps drivers from slowing down and stopping and adding several minutes to the show, just so they can gain a half a lap back

Several years ago one of our local tracks got to the point that even bombers were pulling that crap. It was taking forever to get the program run. I went down to the pits and found an official and complained. He said there wasn't anything they could do about it. I told him all they had to do is require anyone bringing out a yellow to report to the pit and hold them there until they were a lap down. He said they couldn't do that. But they must have discussed it because the next week cars in all classes suddenly had working starters.
