    I know, hence the AUXILIARY part

    At high altitude in thin air, the TF33s occasionally needed a little help, and they didn't have afterburners. So the J60s were installed. They would be air-started at high altitudes and used along with the TF33s to help the airplane climb to and maintain altitude even higher.

      Are you sure? I thought the J60s were only there with the 7600lb turbojet. With the long wing mod came the TF33.

        We did away with the J-60. Didn't buy much. If we went above 50k feet, the crew needed to be in pressure suits. They didn't like that. Had being above 50K possible but rarely went there.

          They're right there in Niseguy's pictures. Although as he said, they clearly removed them once they restored the airplane.
