  • Proper landing at SFO

This "pilot's eye view" depicts German commercial airplane pilots landing at a San Francisco Airport.

Just what I thought... it goes much smoother if you land on the landing strip and skip the whole water bit.

"Ooh woo, I'm a Rebel just for kicks, now
I been feeling it since 1966, now..."

I didn't realize it was the 380 till about mid video. I saw a similar SFO landing video a few years back with a Virgin Atlantic 747.

        Thanks for sharing!

Captain Juergen Raps is Lufthansa's chief pilot and he puts on quite the display of competent professionalism in this video. Notice Captain Raps disabled the autothrottles while over San Jose and selected autopilot off during descent over Moffett Field and the south bay. In other words, he was hand flying the visual approach to SFO's Runway 28R in one of the most automated aircraft in production. His touchdown aiming point was the 1,000 ft markers on the runway, the six painted stripes. That's standard in transport jets.

Contrast this to the unstabilized and automation dependent approach flown by Asiana FLT 214. That aircraft actually touched down in the bay, 300 feet before it hit the seawall. The pilots didn't understand what they were doing and ignored obvious signs they were in trouble. That crew has no business flying an airliner, they should be fired. Google "FLCH trap" for more info.

That's a radio controlled airplane. No death necessary.

In my post above I forgot to mention that was the first landing of an Airbus A380 at SFO. Captain Raps seemed to handle it quite well.
