A 41st order for the new-look Champ Car Atlantic chassis may have been just another number for many constructors, but for US manufacturer Swift it had more meaning as it represents the 500th car to be built by the Californian company.
The first 40 016.a cars will be delivered to competing teams next week, completing a turnaround which saw the new design go from blank sheet of paper to finished chassis in just 204 days when it was unveiled at the 2006 Champ Car launch party on 14 February. Now, just 22 days later, the largest delivery of chassis at one time will take place at Swift's San Clemente headquarters.
Swift Engineering began designing race cars in 1983 and, since that time, has completed 16 different chassis for Formula Ford, Champ Car and Atlantic series. The success of the new-look Atlantic championship, however, has taken even the manufacturer by surprise.
"With the delivery of 40 new Atlantic chassis today [Wednesday], we will reach 499 race cars," said president and CEO Chuck Sprague, "This 41st order for our new 016.a thus brings us to another milestone, our 500th car, which is a tremendously important accomplishment.
"During the entire life of the 014.a, we built 41 cars, and we’ve already hit that number before we've delivered the first 016.a chassis. The orders coming in today are a testament to the new-found strength and interest the Champ Car Atlantic has generated this year. We're very honoured to be a part of this programme."
Swift will continue to build the 016.a throughout 2006 for the original fee of $79,500, and is committed to the design and servicing its customers for a three-year period.
