  • New NASCAR Hall of Fame: Charlotte.

They made 'er final today. Good move.

Wonder whether the Indy Racing braintrust ever thought about an Indy Racing Hall of Fame to go along with the museum? That would be cool.

...IMO the Indy 500 musuem is due for a major expansion. While what they do show is great, and fortunately they constantly are changing it around, there's way more that goes unseen.

            Already exists at Indy.

Been there for a long time.

Has lots more history to display than NASCAR has.

Indy racing has always been a bunch of little races and then the 500. Always will be.

The museum's name is "The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum"

I'm really surprised that Defender didn't even know what Indy Racing already has.

I've been there dozens of times and I think what Defender is pointing out is that there is no separate IRL Hall of Fame and the whole place is not all that well thought out and hasn't had a makeover in a long time. Why are there sports cars there mingled in with Foyt's Indy winners? Do Rudolf Carraciolo's trophies deserve that much space? If I were king, I'd make all the Indy winners the focus of the display with Harroun's Wasp the centerpiece. Then add something to each car to flesh out each display, helmet, gloves, anything from the era. Maybe an old pit setup. Then a separate section - which probably means an addition - for Indy 500 drivers and IRL drivers. Put some of the sports cars and classics in a separate facility and get every possible Indy car, winner or not, out of the basement and on display. Move the photo shop down to the main floor so more than 6 people know it exists. Oh and some serious wax and Armorall on those cars.

Jim's got it. There needs to be a separate museum or at least a wing dedicated solely to the illustrious history of just Indy Car racing. Not just IMS and not all the otehr stuff in there (which is great....don't get me wrong).

A Hall of Fame for only 10 years' worth of history? You could probably set it up in a hotel ballroom and still have room left over for kids in Klingon makeup.

Unless you're saying that the CART IndyCar World Series, the Champ Car World Series, USAC, AAA, etc. would all be part of the display... in which case you might have a case for a permanent facility.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I started watching what I call Indy Cars in 1959...but the history of Indy Cars goes back a lot further than that.

In some places at the IMS museum, they have the 500 winner's in chronological order by year. But it's broken up and mixed in with F1, Sportscars and a cup car or two. They should build another floor and have the 500 winners all together. I agree.

Actually, if the plan were to include all of Indy-style racing, you'd need a much bigger building than the current museum. And you wouldn't want to expand the existing one at the expense of the IMS sight lines (as if they could get much worse ).

I'm not sure what all they have but I have heard that IMS owns a bunch of really cool stuff and not all of it is on the main floor or in the Museum basement. In addition to that colllection, there are other cars in buildings on the grounds near the north end of the Speedway and there were more across the street in the old shopping mall although I think those were moved. As an example, there was a spectator who was famous for being the first one in line every year when the track opened - his old panel truck is in storage somewhere on the grounds.

You heard correctly, but I think they have moved that.
