  • KK buying Menard Engines?

    I no longer can read Mark C's website but there is a post in the IRL forum that says Mark is reporting that KK is going to buy Menard Engine Group to rebuild Atlantics engines. If my memory is clear, MEG used to known as Menard Cheever Technologies before John bought Eddie out and at one point, they had the strongest IRL engines going. I have heard there was some considerable dissatisfaction with the way the IPS rebuild program was handled and MEG lost a lot of business when that contract was moved to Speedway. It is also pretty widely known that the MEG NASCAR program was, ummm, not a success.

    So what is KK going to do with this outfit?

      Cosworth is going to have a lot to do with all the Atlantic and ChampCar engines that will need rebuilds throughout the year.

      I could see them needing additional capacity, Menard would have the equipment needed, and not much else to do. If KK owned the joint, anyone doing "brake cleaner rebuilds" would quickly find themselves looking for work.

          Well, they're going from rebuilding engines for 18 ChampCars to rebuilding for 18 ChampCars plus 30 Atlantics. That's a pretty steep increase in business. And having more business than you can handle is always a good problem to have

          When you have that much growth, sometimes it makes more sense to acquire an entire company than attempt to grow the infrastructure yourself.

            True but sometimes it makes sense to have all your operations under one roof. Heck, maybe KK acquires MEG and shutters the Cosworth CA shop.

                No, the Torrance facility is fine. No need to "shutter" it.

                  Cosworth has also been rapidly expanding into the consumer parts market. There will be no 'shuttering' of the Torrence facility. They recently took a bunch more people onboard, actually.

                  The England facility is doing WRC and 4 F1 cars, and the US side is doing 18 ChampCars and 30 Atlantics. Plus all of those "Cosworth Focus"es they are making now. Adding Menards old engine group to take some weight would be pretty welcome. Isnt Menard's group still doing all the IPS engines?
