  • Gene Simmons interviewed in Forbes (2/13)

Interesting stuff from Gene. I didn't know that the IRL represents Simmons/Abramson's first (and so far only) client. Also, the IRL logo "sucks". The plans for Indy are to have an "Indy Girl" clothing line and soapbox racers.

How much are they being paid for this??

    Heavy Metal Marketing

Kiss front man Gene Simmons wants to rock corporate America with his new marketing company.

Bassist Gene Simmons is a marketing genius. He turned the 1970s hair band Kiss into an almost $1 billion enterprise by licensing the band's name and looks to everything from credit cards to a Kiss-opoly board game. Coming soon: a Kiss Babies cartoon, Kiss Broadway plays, a Kiss casino and even Kiss toothbrushes. Now Simmons, 56, wants to market his marketing. With Richard Abramson, who managed Pee-Wee Herman's career and invented insurance-backed film financing, Simmons has started a company to help businesses sharpen their message. His first client: Indy Racing League, the Nascar competitor that runs the Indianapolis 500. He recently talked to FORBES about his new gig.

How in the world did you convince Indy to work with you?

The first thing we said was that their logo sucked. I didn't know what it was, and it just didn't connect with me. And they were all over the place. You have to simplify the message. You go to Burger King and know you can have it your way. That's all you need to know.

What are your plans for Indy?

We're going to have an Indy-girl clothing line. We're going to have Indy soapbox racers. Let school kids come up with a logo for a forthcoming race and compete for scholarships. The problem with school is that the reward is a grade, not money.

How much of the new agency is going to be about your celebrity?

I'm not foolish enough to think that just because I'm charming, attractive and powerful that that's the sole reason people will want to use us. The real first reason is the freak show, the curiosity factor. Here's the guy who sticks his tongue out. That's okay. Whatever it takes to get them to sit down and listen for a while.

Do you have any other clients yet?

Are we interested in other companies? Sure. But only at the highest levels. There aren't enough hours in the day to take vice presidents and secretaries through learning curves. If you're not talking to the head guy, it doesn't matter.

Well, he had Kiss. I think he was a big part of the business end of that band. I'll say it again. Someone would be a fool to underestimate the business and marketing prowess of this guy. When he sinks his teeth into something he won't let it go until he's happy. If the IRL is his first official client I'd think it wold be doubly important to him to make this work. If this flops, his firm could be toast.

I'm a little put off by the guy's comments. I realize he comes from rock, not from boardrooms, but he doesn't seem to be adding much in the way of insight, and the ideas he's talking about are pretty small-scale stuff.

Who knows, maybe he'll hit a chord (so to speak) with some people and get them to come to a race or flip on the TV.

So far, not too impressive, though, I've heard better ideas on trackforum.

Eureka! The best way to weasel money out of the IRL is to tell them how much they suck!

The Gang of Four could get very rich...

At any rate, I'd like to see Gene's ideas for a new IRL logo. I'm not a HUGE fan of the current one but at least it's distinctive.

At least we can agree on that one Really, racing leagues in general struggle with the whole Logo thing. The last one i thought was pretty cool was the old Winston Cup logo.. The old IndyCar logo from the early to mid 90's was pretty cool too.

I kind of like the logo... matches MLB or NFL, it's kind of a cookie-cutter of the professional American sport theme.

Personally, I think they should have just put "Indy Racing League" under the Winged Wheel (without the words "Indianapolis Motor Speedway") and been done with it.

Instantly recognizable, even today; instantly tells people what your series is all about.

Sure he is. Just ask all of his other clients.

The first thing we said was that their logo sucked. I didn't know what it was, and it just didn't connect with me.

Do you hear that Tony? Gene says it sucks. It doesn't "connect" with Gene. Change it!

You go to Burger King and know you can have it your way. That's all you need to know.

If we can just get the IRL to be more like Burger King it will finally be successful.

Have you ever eaten at Burger King?

We're going to have an Indy-girl clothing line.

No doubt it will be very classy and a huge failure.

The problem with school is that the reward is a grade, not money.

I've been saying this for years. You want to light up a bunch of third-graders? Throw away those stupid report cards and whip out stacks of tens and twenties. Japan has been paying their kids for years. No wonder our kids are such a bunch of losers.

Do you have any other clients yet?

Are we interested in other companies? Sure.

Translation: No. Just the people with the sucky logo.

Why do I have the feeling this is not going to end well for the IRL or racing in general?

Just thought that needed some repeating.

On a personal note, I think all marketing experts are morons who cant hack a real job.

Again, I question his research going into this project:

"We're going to have Indy soapbox racers"

Well, is this going to be in partenrship with the "All American Soap Box Derby"...?
You know, the organization that has been holding these events since 1934...? The same organization that has a current and strong partership with NASCAR...?

Or is this a "new series"... in order to protect what soap box racing "should be"...? Has the AASBD lost site of what Soap Box Racing is meant to be...?

Just a few questions that probably need to be addressed.

Maybe Gene is going to return Soap Box Derby cars to their oval track tradition.

                        Hey, if Honda pulls out...

Just what soap box derby racing needs -- its very own split!

Simmons also has some sort of partnership with B/W/R on this deal, a fairly successful PR firm. They do all the PR work for some kind of amateur hour TV show called 'American Idol. You may recall that Simmons was a guest judge on that show. That wasn't an accident and neither was Simmons being interviewed by Forbes.

Jim...is it safe to assume that you are a big supporter of this deal between Simmons and the IRL?

                              do you expect big things?
