Fair question: How much of the purse goes to the driver? How much to the teams?

Since it's inception, CART and now Champ Car have always had lower purses relative to other racing series. The original model was teams had ownership in the series and thus assumed the risk/reward of the series. It was not based on the purse model. The purse situation really has not changed. I don't know whether the franchise system has since they (the teams, KK, PG and GF not withstanding) no longer have ownership.

OK, hesitantly, if that's the game you wish to play....

Bobby Hamilton Jr, 36th place in Nextel Cup beats out Indy 500 winner and IRL champion.

        Kinda senseless, eh?

Franchise system no longer exists. That went out with the CART bankruptcy. Who knows about driver and team? Some are salaried, some are percentages of the purse, some are combinations of both, some have personal services deals with sponsors, etc.

Put another way, Vitor Meira earned just $12,000 less for second place in the "500" than Bourdais earned for the whole season.

Considering NEXTEL Cup had twice as many races last year, I'd say the comparison is moot. Now, maybe if you did an average or something.

And Formula One pays zero in purse money. What does that say about them?

Can anyone name a first class series where purse money makes even a tiny impact on team budgets?

NASCAR, for one. Did you ever read a boxscore? And I doubt that Wheldon';s $1 million-plus for winning Indy didn't affect AGR's bottom line.

And F1 DOES pay prize money. It's unannounced but based on a complex formula on where the car stands at "X" point of the race, etc. Mario Andretti once said that he had to have his accountant figure it out. One of the reasons F1 teams are griping.....a lot of the money doesn't kick back to them.

It's anything but moot because your statistic proves there are fans and sponsors to make "twice as many races" feasible.

Can Manning going to CCWS then be considered anything but a demotion?

Sounds like Tony found a different way to subsidize his grids.

What was he to do? It's not like Davidson has gone onto a race seat either.

Can't you people find anything new to argue about? To paraphrase Defender, lazy and unoriginal.

OK......we'll cut Nextel Cup driver's winnings in half.

Jeff Gordon, 11th place in NASCAR Nextel Cup, beats out Indy 500 winner and IRL champion.

stnkypete, maybe you're right. Same thing came up a year ago. I believe, though, the difference was greater in '05 than in '04.

Okay, fine, Jakester. Guess that explains why Gordon, Stewart, Blaney, Kahne, Yeley, etc., have gone to Cup. They sure aren't going to CC for their purses. Duh.
