  • Legge: Will she? Won't she? It's so exciting!

    From Atlas:

PKV Racing officials have refused to confirm mounting speculation that British racer Katherine Legge has signed to race for their Champ Car squad in 2006.

The team emphasised to autosport.com that all the drivers that they have been testing in the off-season are targeting two seats with the team and an announcement of their line-up won't be made until February 14.

Frenchman Franck Montagny will join the list of candidates when he tests for the team at Sebring in Florida next week.

Giorgio Pantano, Ryan Briscoe and Ryan Dalziel tested with the team before Christmas, along with Legge.

Last season's driver Cristiano da Matta, who scored the team's first win at Portland, also remains in the frame for the drive.

Former champion and team co-owner Jimmy Vasser has also yet to announce whether he will retire.
Please. There is not the slightest shred of doubt that Legge will be in the car. That decision was made months ago, as soon as it was clear that Danica was going to capture the attention of the public.

I hope she does run in CC in 06. I wish her well, she seems like a decent racer and a nice enough person. I've got no problem w/her. I think they (CC management) are going to find out though that even if she wins she won't get 10% of the press of Danica. And almost every single artical about KL will also mention DP.

Bring her to Indy when she's ready and you guys will get some press if she does well. Till then they're just tilting at windmills.

I hope she doesn't go CC racing in '06.

The decision to put her in a Champ Car was made in June 2005. The problem for Legge is that no matter how good she may be, without a succesful run at Indy, she will always be viewed as Danica's understudy. The media doesn't usually care as much about the second person to do something as they did the first.

I just wanna see Kat racing, she's a great person, and a great race car driver. I don't care if she runs at Indy, but if she ever does, I hope she kicks Danica's butt.
"Ninety-two years ago [the Indy 500] was probably like any other race," said 2005 winner Dan Wheldon. "But over time it's just created so many storylines and history for people of our generation that now it's just massive. People value that history and tradition and you just can't take that away."

Oh Jimmy, you try and try.

As we all know you frequent the "other forums", so im sure you read the posts by the people actually AT Sebring during the tests... who actually TALKED to the drivers and staff in question here... who made it pretty darn clear that the decision was far from made. But that information doesnt help your agenda nor does it make nice little bating titles for threads, so i understand why you ignore it. The decision wasnt made "months ago" to have her race full time in CCWS. It wasnt even made "week ago" if it even HAS been made. Kat, Jim McGee (you know, the guy who runs the team...), Vasser, and KK dont seem to think the decision was made "months ago".

But what do they know! Clearly their most vocal internet critic knows far more about their decisions than they do... as they make them.

The media doesn't usually care as much about the second person to do something as they did the first.
First to do what? Lead Indy? Im fairly sure thats Danica's only major "first" as a female. Kat likely will never even run Indy, and there were handfuls of female drivers before either was even born...

Second person to do something? Legge has actually won some races, how's Danica doing in that category?

Wow. Please provide a link about that decision. I don't think she's ready, but sure would like to know who decided months ago to bring her up to CC.

BTW, don't forget you and I have a bet payable to Brian's Wish that the Atlantics will or will not have 25 new swifts at Long Beach in April. The $$$ amount is 200. I hope you have the check already made out.

I used to think Jim was down on ChampCar, but between catching Legge-fever and bursting at the seems over the growth of Atlantics, I believe he's finally become a KK fan in a big way!

$200? I don't remember it being that much but no matter. I won't be paying. Be sure and post the specifics right before you mail your check.

sure would like to know who decided months ago to bring her up to CC.
KK. Robin reported last summer that he approached Rahal about buying Danica's contract but he said no. At that point, he was reasonably sure he needed a woman as well and signed Legge to an exclusive deal. Chip talked to her and she said, no, I have a deal with KK. Once KK signed her, there was no doubt what was next - she's going to end up in a CC seat and all this testing and hype is so they can say 'Katherine earned this drive, she didn't get it just because she's a pretty girl.'

As I've said numerous times before, if I were KK, I would do EXACTLY the same thing. I think Legge has some talent and she's probably quick enought and competent enough to paddle around at the deep end of the pool until she figures out the rest. The part I find amusing is all this 'will she, won't she' stuff. She's in the car no matter what; the only thing that could change that is if she gets hit by a bus.
