Danica vs. Katherine will be story of '06

Just got back from Key West and getting caught up on some reading.

However, Champ Car has to do something to a) attract attention to itself this season and, b) counter Danicamania, which does not appear to be going away. Just this week, Patrick was named Female Athlete of the Year after dominating a worldwide Internet election by usatoday.com.

So far I don't see Legg's name on the Rolex 24 entry list or that she's even tested a Daytona Prototype, so Patrick is still way, way ahead in the publicity department.

If Legge doesn't race in the Indy 500 then there is absolutely no chance she will attract any more attention than any other CC driver which is ho-hum.

Sophomore driver in a fading team vs rookie in team that has not won a race (I think)? Don't think that'll make many headlines. Especially as they will not be against each other.

Kathy will have to Race the 500 or selected Cup events. I can't even imagine her in a NEXTEL CUP car until doing ARCA or Busch. The only publicity in the form of compairsons between Danica and her will be in the minds of CCWS promoters.

So wrong. The media is doing it non stop, Legge is getting press off Danica all the time because obviously, they're both females, ones a winner, the other did great at Indy. Not only that but her respectable F1 and CC drives are earning her more and more press all the time.

The media seems to point out the differences in the gals quite often. In racing, the most important element is what happens behind the wheel and so far, I've seen that they give high scores for Legge's drives and wins but not in a top class yet. Danica got 4th at Indy and a few poles.

And you can take it to the bank, if/when Legge moves up the media will be all over this, admiditly Legge will be getting a free ride from Danica on many talking points but on the flip side of that coin, what makes the story even more interesting is that Legge is a winner.

We'll see how it shakes out.

For Legge to generate some great surge in CCWS publicity there will have to be some increase in the press credentials requested by media outlets that do not cover racing. The tiny numbers of open wheel media know who she is, the overall motorsports media isn't going to give much added attention unless she wins, sports media in general ignores open wheel racing that doesn't happen in Indianapolis in May and non sports media won't give her the time of day unless there's something in the story to grab their attention. Unfortunately for CCWS no matter the coverage she gets or even if she should win, a major part of the stories will be explaining that CCWS is derived from the CART series but NOT the IRL and does NOT run the Indianapolis 500 where Danica Patrick races.

JJ numbers only mean anything to those of us on this board. JJ numbers haven't prevented sponsors from leaving, drivers with no rides, engine manufacutres leaving, one early and a double pullout of the MIPS series as an IRL whole while Panther, Hemelgarn etc. can't get anyone to fund a car.

If those JJ numbers we're so vitol, why did RedBull leave.... or Pennzoil for that matter? Thats my point...

And to the original post in this thread: there is no "countering Danicamania".

What's there to counter when both recieve the same network TV numbers? The eyeballs aren't tilting the scale here, and Danica isn't shifting the minds of those that make the decisions for those sponsors that are on the way out.

Indy? Yes, thats a one time great event that pulls great numbers and rose from 2004. Outside of that, its the same old crackers for both series....

Danica vs. Katherine... they don't race in the same series. It's like saying next year will be Bourdais vs. Wheldon.

Makes no sense.

Put them in the same series and then it's worth comparing, other than that they're two competitors racing completely different fields, mostly on completely different types of circuits.
