If the games keep going down to the wire, I would expect that to rise.
The side-by-side thing?
Speaking for myself the decline in interest started with the strike and spiraled with Sosa's cork bat and steroid relevations, when ballplayer(s) purjured themselves during Congressional testimony that put the nail in it.
SCB, I love a man of principle.
While I follow stick ball a little I don't follow it with the same zeal.
Blame that of the LA Angels of Anaheim owner and George Steinbrenner as well.

So it's the Angels and the Yankees in the World Series... see how much I know?? Last time I was paying any attention to baseball the Angels and the Yankees were both in the American League.
I was just mentioning in brief (and apparently in great enough height) reasons for my disenchantment with baseball---me, the guy with the Sandy Koufax edition of Union 76's Meet the Dodger Family magazine hanging on my wall.
So I have disgust for:
George Steinbrenner
LA Angels of Anaheim
Kenny Rogers
The designated Hitter
Interleague play
Mark McGwire
Bobby Bonds
Salaries
Ticket prices
The Metrodome
The way free agency has wrecked the game
But you knew that...

I think you meant Barry Bonds. Oh and don't forget these:
Steroids, HGH, Creatine
Artificial turf
Arguments in favor of instant replay
Fans who interfere with play
6-18 pitchers and .220 hitters who want $6 million a year
All domed stadia
Million dollar players who can't bunt
...it's the first World Series I've watched in 10 years, and I've watched darn near every inning of both games to this point. (It should be noted that as a lifelong MLB fan I was turned off by the strike in 1994 and turned my back on the game until this year.)
Of course it also helps that I'm a White Sox fan!
a bad day at the race track beats a good day at work
This has more to do with the fact that the Red Sox were in the series last year. If you compare numbers to two years ago, they are actually up (at least that is what I think I heard on the radio).
