DAY ONE REPORT - THURSDAY OCTOBER 20
Thursday, 20 October 2005
A record total of 56,786 people attended day one of the 2005 Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast today including more than 10,000 students from more than 140 schools across Northern NSW and Southern Queensland.
All three support categories took to the track – the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup, CARSguide Aussie Racing Cars and Haymans Electrical V8 Utes with a Practice, Qualifying and Race 1.
One of the main focuses today was a special Speed Comparison test over one lap between three Team Australia cars – a Champ Car driven by Alex Tagliani, V8 Supercar driven by David Besnard and Aussie Racing Car driven by Danielle Argiro – the only female competitor on the streets of Surfers Paradise this weekend. With all three cars together on the Lexmark Hairpin, the acceleration of the 750-horsepower Champ Car won out from the V8 Supercar and Aussie Racing Car.
Lexmark Indy 300 General Manager James O’Brien:
“A record first day crowd, exciting racing, well-attended off track events and plenty of on track entertainment has set a great platform for the Lexmark Indy 300 for the next three days. Despite a bit of much-needed rain for Queensland this afternoon, patrons including the thousands of students in attendance enjoyed the bumper-to-bumper racing in the support categories, and the new Speed Comparison initiative which provided a great spectacle on the track. There is already plenty of green and gold support right around the circuit, and the inclusion of three Team Australia Champ Cars, a Team Australia Aussie Racing Car and Team Australia V8 Ute is generating a new wave of support for the Event. The Official Off Track events held this week have also received overwhelming support from fans. These have really transformed the Gold Coast into a carnival creating plenty of Indy Fever.”
