  • Question about CART tv package for 04

I have heard a couple of times during the race broadcasts that CART is planning on having 10 races on CBS next year. Now with the financial difficulty that CART is in, would it be better to time buy on a channel like Speed or something less expensive? Or do the sponsors require broadcast tv to be happy? Also, does anyone know how much it costs per race on CBS versus Speed?

    What sponsors?

While we are asking questions about CART's tv plans. Add this one. Who will be producing the broadcasts? The Speed Channel has performed this task for CART the last two seasons. So far CART hasn't reupped with the Speed Channel and CBS is a pure time buy. As I see it, as of now they have committed to buy time without having the ability to provide a program.

When do dates have to be set?

I mean the schedule had no dates, when does CBS have to know a date and time in order to agree with a time buy?

I think the broadcasts are produced by the Lingner Group, an independent production company. Lingner used to do, and may still, racing shows on ESPN and espn2. CART would probably still use them, if its a time-buy, no matter what channel CART is on. Unless CART plans on cutting production costs and goes with someone else.

Maybe they could do several one hour shows showing the highlites from several races, like they did for the first CBS broadcast this year.

It was actually a pretty interesting format.

And, I see that the World Of Outlaws will have some of their races on the Outdoor Network, so I tend to think that there are options available to Cart. There are a lot of channels out there.

          UPN, PAX, etc.

          If it comes to that.

If CART is going to buy time for millions, CBS will find time to sell them. Of course, like we saw in the case of R-A, it may not be live. I expect to see a lot of tape-delayed and edited coverage. I also expect to see fewer than 10 races on CBS.

Does anyone know what CART has to pay for a race on CBS vs. Speed? And would it be better to pay less and be seen by less people or go for the CBS deal?

I can’t speak to the respective time buy costs but, from an advertiser’s standpoint, they look for market penetration. And network broadcasts a rule delivers deeper penetration. That being the case, it would be smarter to pay more, and be seen by more.

CART doesn't buy time on Speed. IIRC, they pay for the production which runs some $3-500K per race and then Speed sells the ad space. They are supposed to kick back the profits to CART if there are any but, so far, ad sales have lagged well behind costs. Last I knew, CART and Speed were asking $5,000 for a 30-second spot and couldn't sell them all. There are also some sweetheart deals involved. PacifiCare gets 2 free spots per race for sponsoring a CART BOD member's car. I also heard there was some wierd deal involving one TV sponsor; they pay CART based on sales. They put up an 800 number and then kick back a portion of the revenue generated, sort of a royalty. So far, that hasn't seemed to generate much money.

I still don't understand why CART has to pay when they have double the network TV ratings of the IRL and far more attendance. Why would sponsors go with a series with half the ratings and fewer butts in the seats?

Anyone know what the total viewers for each series has been on tv for the year so far?

when they have double the network TV ratings
Are you talking overall or just this past weekend? Because overall, Cart doesn't have double the network TV ratings of the IRL.

The IRL's total viewership, counting Fontana, is just shy of 16 million - 15.7M or so.

Some rather rash statements but you failed to post any numbers along with their source.
