Since we're talking about the Indianapolis 500, held at a national historic landmark since 1911 with more than 350,000 people attending annually, etc., etc., yes. We're not talking about the third try after two failures at a St. Petersburg Grand Prix.

Why no.... but that wasn't the question
Then again, they had done an excellent job of growing their sport after the benign neglect of the Hulman-USAC years when the track owners called the shots. If you were running CART, would you have allowed that crowd back into the tent?

As I recall, in the press release announcing the formation of the IRL, the stated purpose was to control the type of cars that race in the 500. Now toss in that every public proposal floated by Mr. George called for defacto complete control of Champ Car racing to rest with him. Seems to me that there is strong support for the case that Mr. George didn't want anyone else to have a voice.

Thanx, SPM.....he left the door ajar a touch, but that should've told everyone where Bernie was on this deal......some of his other statements in that link from last year said exactly what others have been saying about this supposed or proposed deal....to get what he wanted, he didn't need to take over CART and didn't need to bother.

    Here's where I saw it:

    LINK

Asked whether he would be interested in a takeover of a championship that has suffered several high-profile defections to the rival Indy Racing League (IRL) series of late, Ecclestone told Reuters: "Probably not. Let's see."

CART already had a series run and owned by the owners before they went public, it never worked then, why would it work now? In fact, it is because the animals always ran the zoo that they are in this mess now. They are the ones that ignored, laughed at Tony George behind his back and underestimated the power of IMS/Indy 500 and TG that they are in this mess.

JoeBob, you are reaching, Bernie was always a smoke screen.

I see you flunked Logic 101. You can't prove a negative. The burden of proof is on you.

If it's your opinion, say so.

How were they to know what Tony George was really after?

A few of the idiots are in the IRL now.
