  • Turbo box office thread

Wednesday opening was estimated to be $5.6 million (kinda weak, but in-line with tracking). They're estimating the five-day total will be about $35 million by time Sunday rolls around. It did get an "A" Cinemascore from audiences, on the positive side.

Landscape is really crowded with a lot of CG kids films releasing near "Turbo".

will there be a way to track the number of ticket sales nationwide, rather than gross sales?? I think it would be helpful to know the number of eyeballs it reaches. Oh, and then divide that number by 2!

I see this movie as nearly 100% conquest exposure, since the Indycar audience is currently so small.
Lets hope they like what they see.

I felt Cars was a big plus for Nascar and this can be a similar benefit.

It feels like many of my friends and acquaintances with young kids are going to see Turbo. Hope that's a good omen.

Turbo dropped back to #2 on Thursday, well behind DM2.

I'm not saying Turbo is a flop by any means (and in fact it's probably going to be considered a hit), but it is going to be destroyed by DM2 in the end.

No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

DM3?? I am guessing you mean Despicable Me 2 - which I suspect is overall a better movie (have not seen it yet)...

Turbo's big weakness is a slloowww start (no pun intended) and fairly weak characters/voice actors (Samuel L. Jackson was easily the best character/voice) - I was really worried for a while and didn't mind when I had to take my son and his friend to the restroom early on in the film.... but the second half was great......

Yep, sorry, I lost track of the sequels.

Despicable Me opened at the beginning of a 4 day weekend for many people. Turbo opened during the middle of a work week.

Yeah, that would definitely give them an advantage comparing opening to opening.

But DM2 is two weeks old, and it's still kicking everybody's arse. It's a monster.

Turbo, the animated story of a snail with a need for speed starring Ryan Reynolds, took a disappointing third place with $21.5 million. The movie, which opened Wednesday, has done $31.2 million in five days.

I read in another article it cost about $130M to make. "Conjuring" took the weekend at #1. It wasn't up against much competition. Despicable Me 2 is in its 3rd week. Other than that you had R.I.P.D which looked awful IMO.

I don't know how, but BOM is already showing Sunday estimates.

some criticism of the release date:

After opening rather weak on Wednesday, Turbo is just an ill-timed release having Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 eating up the family dollar for the last month.

I don't know much about the movie industry, but I wouldn't think this would bode well for a potential sequel:

The film is the third-lowest all-time opening weekend for a DreamWorks CGI film, doing better than only Antz (1998) and the Aardman-produced Flushed Away (2006). However, adjusted for inflation and 3D prices, Turbo had the smallest opening weekend audience EVER for a DreamWorks CG pic.
Turbo, the DreamWorks-produced and David Soren-directed animated feature about the snail that could, opened in a disappointing third place.

For reference, it's the 27th DreamWorks Animation release in its 15 years of releasing films.

According to that same chart, it ranks 19 out of those 27 films on Rotten Tomatoes, and 22nd on IMDB.
