  • T-Mobile Cup Series?

    Per Jayski:

Analysts say T-Mobile may acquire Sprint; T-Mobile Series?:

Sprint Nextel may be a takeover target, according to one of the nation’s largest investment banking firms. Deutsche Telekom, owner of T-Mobile and the world’s sixth largest phone company, may consider acquiring Overland Park-based Sprint to block a price war in the mobile phone industry, analysts for Merrill Lynch said today.
The Wall Street firm said Sprint’s operational problems and shaky position in the U.S. wireless industry may force the company to cut prices even further to attract customers. T-Mobile generally is considered to be the low-cost alternative among the top five U.S. mobile phone companies.
Last week, Sprint introduced an unlimited voice and data wireless plan that undercut other U.S. companies. Lynch, which advises its clients to sell Sprint shares, said it is not aware of any acquisition discussions.(Kansas City Star)(3-7-2008)
Certainly lacking the continuity that Winston enjoyed for decades.

Say what you want, but the T-Mobile Cup Series does not have a ring to it.

At this point maybe they should just call it Cellular Cup Series.

Think of the cost savings from changing logos every couple of years!! They could just use a plain white background with black letters.

Hopefully Sprint keeps the sponsorship for a while. Frankly both Nationwide and Sprint have good rings to them (no pun intended)

I guess we should be glad there is not a Peon Mobile Network out there somewhere.

If Catherine Zeta-Jones is predominately involved, I'm cool with it

I'm 99% sure that by contract, they are not allowed to change the name again. When the whole ATT/Cingular dispute was ongoing, one of the things I remember was that built into the NASCAR/NEXTEL contract was the right to change the name once....not twice, as that was an argument NASCAR made against ATT, as no such agreement would be allowed for the other cellular companies, who were grandfathered in when NEXTEL took over sponsorship.

So I believe it will be the SPRINT cup until the 10 year naming rights is over.

Or they could renegotiate under the new owner, change the name and open it back up to AT&T to stay for a while longer.

You're right only you have it backward. The argreement was that the ATT sponsored car could change once from Cingular to ATT, but that's it.

It had nothing to do with the Sprint Cup name. They can change that as often as Sprint changes names.

At least it would end the confusion as to why Sprint Cup races don't use Sprint Cars.
