  • Why I liked hdolan

He was as tough on himself as he was on others in an argument. He'd been through a lot in life but he let you know you could survive it without running away.

He could be exasperating with his stubbornness but you could count on his consistency. He held forth his defenses like granite against the rain.

I know some here would accuse him of being small minded or prejudiced but I think he was just being a stern judge and unrelentingly logical critic, from his own perspectives, formed by experience and hard knocks, and not untested by rigorous examination. He had proved time and again in real life (or IRL, as it were) to have a good heart and a kind soul for the less fortunate or misunderstood folk in every walk of life. So he didn't need to put on airs or "say things to make you think he's right" (I bet he had a lyric of his own to insert there, but it's just not coming to me right now).

I wish I could have made him laugh a little more. I'm going to miss him for a long time. Heck, I argued with him in my head, sometimes, even when he wasn't online, so I guess and hope he'd laugh at me now, knowing I'm probably going to be dying to make one more post that he'd have to brush off or (more likely) knock down.

I would have loved to spend just a few hours in E Stand and hear his views on the years' rookies, Champs, and seasoned underdogs, and who among them had Jimmy Bryan qualities. Probably none

Godspeed Howard. Say hi to dog-ring and Railbird for us.

I can but echo your sentiments, and regret I never met him. I missed at least one opportunity. But perhaps we shall all meet in time.

We did honor him this past weekend at our track, at the beginning and the end of the show.
You've worked so hard on the kidney. Very special -- the kidney has a very special place in the heart. It's an incredible thing. Donald John Trump

Howard and Marta helped me set up the IRL Crew tent at Texas Motor Speedway in 1997 and could be counted on to engage the fans and the volunteers. Outspoken always and never strayed from his principles. A true friend of the CREW.
